| | Folks who generally shy away from Boulez's Mahler ought to hear this performance. It's a whale of a good time, plain and simple. Far from being cold and analytical, the first movement positively glows with romantic warmth. Boulez is especially generous with the big retard leading to the first movement's climax, where the Chicago brass literally whoop it up, just as Mahler demands. The second movement is fast, but never lacking in charm, while the funeral march of the third movement has the right quality of cartoon ghoulishness. Good klezmer-like interludes, too, if not quite up to Kubelik's incomparable standard. Best of all, the finale positively blazes--no dragging, no underplayed climaxes--simply a blast from beginning to end. Indeed, it's hard to dismiss the notion that the usually cerebral Boulez is simply getting a naughty thrill letting his Chicagoans play the pants off of this most colorful of romantic symphonies. They've recorded it at least four times previously (for Giul... (less)Artist: | $8 - $18 8 Merchants |
| | Hallowed Ground is the fourth release from country/rock/folk/psychedelic act I See Hawks In L.A. Formed in 1999 by songwriting team Rob Waller and Paul Lacques, the Hawks have traveled far from their humble back porch in sunny southern California. In 2001, their eponymous debut established the Hawks signature sound: high lonesome three part harmonies, twang guitar and unadorned acoustic arrangements, with lyrics musing on mortality, whales, and the geography of a fading pre-apocalyptic L.A. Fan favorite Grapevine followed in 2004 with California Country emerging in 2006. Legendary California country artists such as The Byrd's Chris Hillman joined in and strummed right along. And now here's Hallowed Ground . The album carries much that Hawks fans have grown to expect: those beautiful harmonies, timeless songwriting, and epic psychedelic guitar and steel. The Hawks have hit their stride. These songs cover a wide ranging territory, yet it all fits together into the Hawks underlying phi... (less)Artist: I See Hawks In L.A. | $7 - $13 7 Merchants |

| | Sylvie Chenard has been working on her new whale project, Océan, since 1999. In recent years we have come to know her duo performances on her 1999 CD, Hybride, and on her 2000 CD, Manifeste pour contrer la violence faite aux femmes. Now in 2002 the whale will be presenting elements of her experimentation and improvisation with some of people who she has invited to improvise with her in duos. In October, she will launch a follow-up to Océan, the Océan à vendre / for sale project, a duo with Jon Asencio with whom she explores the energies of anarchist, pacifist, and feminist resistance and pleasure. Everything is for sale; nothing is for sale. This is the territory of urban myth, between the waters of an imaginary libertarian and those of a little science fiction about totalitarian reality: a universe of sects, sadomasochistic cravatistes, saints-assassins-warriors of global politics and economics, daily crimes against humanity, rights deniers and dignity destroyers. This sea-soak... (less)Artist: | $19 - $21 2 Merchants |

| | Some of the greatest dub albums are jam sessions. Think of Lee "Scratch" Perry's genius Black Ark recordings in the '70s or Adrian Sherwood's early experiments in noise with On-U Sound. New York City punk-soul outfit Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and Dub Narcotic's salaciously deep-voiced producer Calvin Johnson had already recorded together at Johnson's Olympia studios for JSBX's 1998 album, Acme . Around the same time, during a two-day session, the artists laid down the nine tracks that comprise this loose, sprawling, eminently lovable studio album. JSBX was the house band, Johnson the mischievous frontman. So what d'ya get? Plenty of echoed harmonica, deep bass drums, James Brown-style squeals, and lyrics that focus mostly on food and being cool ("Banana Meltdown," "Chicken Legs," "Frosty Junction"). "If you come to my town," Calvin sings on the 10-minute funkafied "Fudgy the Whale," "you've got to know all 16 dances." Damn right! --Everett True (less)K. Records | $21 amazon.com |
| | While Gene Autry was named Americas Favorite Cowboy and Roy Rogers The King of the Cowboys, Tex Ritter became known as Americas Most Beloved Cowboy. Unlike the others, however, Ritter pursued a very active, successful recording career way after Hollywoods singing cowboys had ridden into the sunset and he continued to make regular appearances in the country music charts right up to his death. One of his most memorable recordings was, of course, the theme from High Noon, heard on the soundtrack of the 1952 Gary Cooper movie. Recordings from 1945-1956. Track Listing: Long Black Rifle, The Bandit, Brave Man, Marshall Of Wichita, Gunsmoke, Wayward Wind, Last Wagon, Last Frontier, Prairie Home, Remember The Alamo, The Searchers (Ride Away), Buffalo Dream, Marshall's Daughter, San Antone Story, High On A Mountain Top, A Whale Of A Tale, Bad Brahma Bull, Turn Around Boy, Cool Water, My Bucket's Been Fixed, Prisoners Song, San Antonio Rose, My Woman Aint Pretty, Go On Get Out, High Noon (Do...
