| | Jack Prelutsky was born in Brooklyn, New York. He attended New York City Public Schools and studied voice at the High School of Music and Art. He enrolled in Hunter College in Manhattan but left soon after "to become a beatnik". Jack has been a cab driver, a busboy, a photographer, a furniture mover, a potter, and a folk singer. He enjoys bicycling, playing racquetball, woodworking and cooking. He lives in Washington State with his wife Carolynn and a vast collection of poetry books and frogs in every shape, size, and form -- except living! There was a time when Jack couldn't stand poetry. In grade school he had a teacher who left him with the impression that poetry was the literary equivalent of liver. He rediscovered poetry in his twenties, and he decided that he would write about things that kids really cared about, and that he would strive to make poetry delightful. He has been writing poetry for more than twenty years and has published more than three dozen books for children. For the first time, the poetry of Dennis Lee, the Pied Piper of children's verse, has been collected in one rousing volume by the inimitable Jack Prelutsky. From food fantasies to schoolyard chants and monster mayhem, Lee really knows how to tickle kids with words. There are quiet poems, rude and rambunctious poems, and some pure nonsense verses that trip off the tongue, begging to be said over and over again. Others capture the attraction of a muddy puddle or the somnolent rhythm of windshield wipers on a rainy day. There's something for everyone in this wonderful collection of read-aloud or read-alone rhymes and Debbie Tilley's (iRiddle-icious/i) buoyant imaginative watercolors are an open invitation to jump in and join the fun. | | It's Halloween and five monsters are brewing a savory Halloween stew. Each monster adds something special to the mixture -- a juicy frog, a bat, a hairy spider. But when the littlest monster gets too curious and tips over the pot, the stew runs away! Little Moe is inconsolable (and very hungry!) until a knock on the door brings an unexpected guest -- and a big Halloween surprise. With rollicking rhyme and glowing watercolors, Pamela Jane and Vera Rosenberry serve up a tasty holiday treat for readers of all ages. | | PreSchool-Grade 2. One autumn evening, Possum looks up and sees the biggest, brightest harvest moon ever. He decides to have one last party before the long winter and invites all of his friends. But the mice, raccoon, crickets, and frogs are all busy getting ready for winter, and it looks as if no one will come. Possum sits by himself in the clearing until everyone realizes it is not a night or a moon to waste without dancing and feasting, and they all join the celebration. Appealing illustrations are done in watercolors and pen-and-ink with subdued autumn and night hues of green, brown, black, and orange. The pictures depict the creatures of the meadow in soft detail, enjoying the moonlight with tiny party hats perched on their heads. The book will be excellent for story times on what animals do during the winter, paired, for example, with Lydia Dabcovich's Sleepy Bear (Dutton, 1982), Leo Lionni's Frederick (Knopf, 1967), and Jack Kent's Round Robin (S & S, 1989). A sensational selection, regardless of the season. -Judith Constantinides, East Baton Rouge Parish Main Library, LACopyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition. | | DIVA long time ago, fire belonged only to the animals in the land above, not to those on the earth below. Curlew, keeper of the sky world, guarded fire and kept it from the earth. Coyote, however, devised a clever plan to steal fire, aided by Grizzly Bear, Wren, Snake, Frog, Eagle, and Beaver. These brave and resourceful animal beings raided the land above and risked all to steal fire from Curlew./DIVDIV /DIVDIVIBeaver Steals Fire/Iis an ancient and powerful tale springing from the hearts and experiences of the Salish people of Montana.
