 | In December 2002 Phil Spector - legendary record producer, legendary control freak, legendary recluse - sat down on a sofa in his Los Angeles castle and gave his first major interview for twenty-five years. The journalist he talked to was Mick Brown. Shortly afterwards, Phil Spector was arrested for murder. Over the course of that day, Spector spoke with extraordinary candour about his life and career; his mercurial rise to become the most successful record producer of the sixties; the genius thathad been both a blessing and a curse; his creation of a sound never before heard in music; his trademark 'Wall of Sound'; his fragile mental state and his years on the brink of insanity. 'I've been a very tortured soul', said Spector. 'I have not been happy. I have devils inside that fight me'. The interview with Spector (described by MOJO as 'one of the most famous interviews in rock journalism') appeared as a cover story in the Telegraph magazine on 1 February 2003. Twenty-four hours later, a Hollywood actress named Lana Clarkson was shot dead in Spector's castle. Phil Spector was immediately arrested, and later released on $1m bail to await trial. Tearing Down the Wall of Sound is Mick Brown's personal odyssey into the heart of the strange life and times of Phil Spector. Beginning with that fateful meeting in Spector's home, and recounting the story of his colourful life and career, including the unfolding of the Clarkson case, this is one of the most bizarre and compelling stories in the annals of pop music. Of all the events at the meet, the relay was the one most teams focused on and the one the crowd waited for. Reaching into his sports bag, Kirk took out Jonah's lucky stone and held it tight. The stone was smooth and warm. Kirk dropped it back into his bag, feeling a surge of new energy. Then he walked quickly to his place on the deck with the other three swimmers representing the Dolphins. The first swimmers took their positions. Kirk was the anchor--he would swim last.brbrThe starting signal sounded, and the first swimmers dived in. The race was a series of sprints, calling for an all-out effort from each swimmer. | | Self-reflection by celebrities tends to be fraught with unmentionable difficulties. Not, though, when the star in question is the ever intelligent, self-aware, articulate, and magnificent Isabella Rossellini. For years, a wall in the entrance of Rossellini's apartment has been covered in pictures taken of her by different photographers. Looking at the "Me Wall," Rossellini writes that she never really saw herself; instead she "saw the photographer's work, their ideas, and our collaboration in capturing fantasies." Looking at Me gathers together Rossellini's private collection of portraits taken of herself by some of the world's leading photographers, including Eve Arnold, Richard Avedon, Michel Comte, Patrick Demarchelier, Fabrizio Ferri, Horst P. Horst, Brigitte Lacombe, Annie Leibovitz, Peter Lindbergh, Robert Mapplethorpe, Steven Meisel, Irving Penn, Herb Ritts, Paolo Roversi, Ellen von Unwerth, and Bruce Weber, as well as filmmakers David Lynch and Wim Wenders. Rossellini invites us to join her as she looks at her favorite portraits, privileging us with her witty, humorous, and self-ironical comments. She traces her career, in photographs, from boxing reporter in Muhammad Ali's training camp to highly successful model, from actress in some of Hollywood's more controversial films to head of her own cosmetic line, Manifesto. Mixed in with these public images are pictures of Rossellini in private, with her children, her dog Macaroni, and her pig Spanky. Irresistibly charming, intelligent yet whimsical, Looking At Me proves the perfect complement to Rossellini herself. (less) | $16 BetterWorld.com - New, Used, Rare Books & Textbooks |
| | In the 1980s a group of entrepreneurs in Ghana created small-scale, mobile film-distribution empires, hitting the road with videocassettes, television monitors, portable gas-powered generators and rolled-up, hand-painted, artist-signed canvas posters. This new medium created the first opportunity for some of the best young painters in Ghana to express themselves on a public scale. In the frequent absence of an original image upon which to base the work they had been commissioned to produce, the artists inevitably created cinematic paintings that were largely interpretive and imagination-driven. In the book's four major essays, author Ernie Wolfe III recounts the rise and fall of the mobile cinema tradition, while noted African art scholar Roy Sieber follows two-dimensional art in Africa from rock paintings in the Sahara to contemporary manuals, wall paintings, and barber board paintings as well as the canvas movie posters themselves; Paul Hayes Tucker compares the phenomenon to 19th century European utility-based painting; and poet and art critic John Yau contributes the perspective of an American art historian. In addition, Hollywood film notables such as horror auteur Clive Barker, actor LeVar Burton, actress Anjelica Huston, and director Gus Van Sant contribute chapter introductions. | | Under the hot sun, the Jeddah streets resemble a scene from an old black-and-white movie: the women dressed like long, dark shadows and the men in their light cotton tunics. Naser's friends have all left town for cooler climes but he can't get away: he's an outsider in Saudi and he needs to hold down his job at the local car wash. During his time off, he sits beneath his favorite palm tree, writing to his mother in Africa and yearning for the glamorous Egyptian actress he hopes to meet one day. It's hard to adjust to a world that puts up so many barriers between men and women: walls in the mosque, divider panels in the buses and veils on the street. Naser feels increasingly trapped, not least by the religious police who keep watch through the shaded windows of their government jeeps. A splash of color arrives in Naser's world when, unexpectedly, a small piece of paper is dropped at his feet. It is a love note, from a woman whose face he has never seen and whose voice he has never heard. She tells him that she will wear a pair of pink shoes the next time she passes so that he can pick her out from the other women in their identical black abayas. Erotic tension runs high; Naser and his 'habibati' begin to exchange letters. But in moments of doubt the pink shoes seem to lead him into a cul-de-sac of thwarted desire, fraught with danger. Relationships between unmarried men and women are illegal under the strict Wahabism of Saudi state rule - and it's not long before their real, but illicit, love must face the hardest test of all...
