| | Most banks and the recently upcoming hedge fund industry rely to a different extent on technical trading rules and technical analysis. The fact that these technical trading rules yield superior returns in practice raises several questions that will be examined in this book. First, one of the most crucial questions is in which assets technical trading rules perform extraordinarily well. This analysis is based on a risk-return approach with an assessment of the negative standard deviation of each asset as a risk indicator. Second, the statistical significance of technical trading is examined by using a simulation method known as bootstrap. Third, null models are simulated to answer the question to what extent autoregressive models and GARCH models are able to capture the dependencies in the future time series. Finally, a rule optimizer algorithm is developed to assess if any rule parameters yield superior returns over a wide range of assets. | | 13-16 October 1998"This volume provides a sample of the present research on the foundations of quantum mechanics and related topics by collecting the papers of the Italian scholars who attended the conference entitled ""The Foundations of Quantum Mechanics -- Historical Analysis and Open Questions"" (Lecce, 1998). The perspective of the book is interdisciplinary, and hence philosophical, historical and technical papers are gathered together so as to allow the reader to compare different viewpoints and cultural approaches. Most of the papers confront, directly or indirectly, the objectivity problem, taking into account the positions of the founders of QM or more recent developments. More specifically, the technical papers in the book pay special attention to the interpretation of the experiments on Bell's inequalities and to decoherence theory, but topics on unsharp QM, the consistent-history approach, quantum probability and alternative theories are also discussed. Furthermore, a number of historical and philosophical papers are devoted to Planck's Weyl's and Pauli's thought, but topics such as quantum ontology, predictivity of quantum laws, etc., are also treated." One consequence of this/divDIVWe are living in an era in which higher education is increasingly policed, in part through pressure on universities to deliver so-called quality in mechanical, technical ways. One consequence of this is the targeting of oppositional and interdisciplinary subjects. In a series of provocative and accessible essays,IA Question of Discipline/Iexplores cultural studies pedagogies and praxis as a case study of the contradictions produced when teaching and researching from radical agendas take place within hierarchical and oppressive institutional contexts. The book opens up critical debates about self-reflexivity in university teaching; about the transformation of oppressive power relations toward more inclusive teaching and learning cultures; and about the paradoxical locations of practitioners, teachers, and learners of cultural studies within universities.IA Question of Discipline/Iwill be essential reading for teachers and students of cultural and media studies, anthropology, education, sociology, and women’s studies./Div (less) | $88 A1Books |
