| | John Denver may have been a 1970s phenomenon, but oh what a phenomenon he was! Between the summer of 1971 when "Take Me Home, Country Roads" cracked the charts and January 1976 when "Fly Away" went to No. 1, the boy-next-door country-folk singer chalked up 10 top-10 hits. Even after the singles began to peak somewhere short of Rocky Mountain heights, Denver ably branched into film (he costarred in the box-office winner Oh God ) and social activism (as much as any entertainer, he deserves credit for making environmentalism a mainstream movement). The man born John Henry Deutschendorf was almost as widely loathed as he was beloved, however: the number of people who were intoxicated by his wholesome, soaring songs were nearly matched by those who wretched at the mention of his name. This two-disc anthology is for the latter group, though it underserves an element of the late superstar's audience. Missing here are "Fly Away," "Calypso," "Rocky Mountain High," "Sweet Surrender," "Take Me... (less)Artist: John Denver | $10 - $25 2 Merchants |
| | Richie Havens in his prime possessed an uncanny knack for inhabiting familiar songs as if they were his hometown. He practically hijacked "Here Comes the Sun" out from under George Harrison, turning his 1971 version of the Abby Road tune into a rhythmic statement all his own and, in the process, charting for the one and only time in his career. That's true to a lesser degree with Lennon-McCartney's "Rocky Raccoon," Bob Dylan's "Just Like a Woman," and Fred Neil's "Dolphins," all of which are found on this 17-track anthology culled from the New York City singer-guitarist's late 1960s and early 1970s records. Havens penned a few songs of his own, notably the antiwar song "Handsome Johnny" (cowritten with actor Lou Gossett), and adapted others in his own inimitable style ("Run Shaker Life," "Freedom," his Woodstock-inspired variation on "Motherless Child"). But he made his mark as an interpreter--one whose work holds up admirably, judging by this focused retrospective. --Steven Stolder (less)Rhino / Wea | $90 amazon.com |

| | Americans love the underdog. Anytime someone is beating the odds, fighting his or her way to the top, like the Little Engine That Could, it resonates well with U.S. audiences; it's in their nature. Sylvester Stallone knew that in 1976, when Rocky was a monstrous hit and established itself in the American cultural lexicon. His low-budget tale of a young boxer who came from the slums of Philadelphia and worked his way to the championship recalls Capra characters such as Mr. Smith or John Doe as he worked his way to fame and self-respect. Like Capra's films from 30 years before, Rocky pushed emotional buttons with audiences, but in a somewhat less maudlin, obvious way; it's possible to enjoy Rocky without feeling embarrassed about it, even in the cynical, postironic '90s. It ranks respectably among the best boxing pictures, such as The Set-Up or Somebody Up There Likes Me . The story paralleled Stallone's own, from a relative unknown to a star with one breakthrough picture. Rocky II (1... (less) Actors: Rocky Anthology | $19 - $45 3 Merchants |
