 | 2008 must be an interesting year to have an outsider's view on the US and its role in the world, and when Ray Davies sings "everywhere I go it looks and feels like America," it's hard to miss a bit of the bitterness in the observation. His second studio solo album in three years, Working Man's Cafe feels like exactly the album a 60-something rocker would craft--assured and direct yet searching and restless, a glimpse into the head of a man who's comfortable in his skin but still wonders how he fits into a world that seems to be turning faster and stranger as the years pass by. Davies has cultivated this contraposition of bitter and sweet, of intertwining comfort and conflict throughout his years leading the Kinks, and now continues into what looks to be a fruitful solo career. There's a bit of George Harrison in the melody and sentiment of "One More Time," acknowledging the widening gap between powerful corporations and the overtaxed little guy, while still envisioning the possibil... | | This career-spanning box of three CDs and a DVD celebrates a legacy that looms larger than that of any blues-rocking guitarist since Jimi Hendrix. Despite fears that a series of posthumous releases had depleted the Stevie Ray Vaughan vaults, previously unreleased gems dominate the selection. Highlights extend from Vaughan's swaggering apprenticeship with Paul Ray and the Cobras to slash-and-burn concert performances from the final month of his life. There are obligatory dips into the songbooks of Hendrix and Buddy Guy, appearances on MTV Unplugged and Austin City Limits , and instrumental interplay with brother Jimmie Vaughan and tourmate Jeff Beck. Though his guitar never loses its flamethrower intensity, the set documents his progression from the showoff licks of the young "Stevie Rave On" into a fully rounded artistry of soulful depth. --Don McLeese (less)Artist: Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble | $36 - $60 9 Merchants |

| | Having delivered their last great album with 1992's haunting Automatic For the People , R.E.M. spent more than decade attempting all kinds of reinvention, from the pointlessly noisy Monster to the painfully dull Up . But with Around the Sun it feels like the band is getting its bearings back. Not only is it the Georgia trio's most consistent album since the 1997 departure of drummer Bill Berry, but it also sees the return of the lush imagery and intricate playing of the band's vintage years. There are trains, mandolins, and Man Ray skies. More importantly, it seems heartfelt. Witness the gorgeous disquietingly dark opener "Leaving New York," the rapturous folk of "I Wanted to Be Wrong" and the solidly intense "Boy In the Well." At 13 generous tracks, it's far from perfect but--just when everyone thought R.E.M. was down for the count-- Around the Sun is an unexpected bruiser of a comeback. --Aidin Vaziri This expanded edition of the band's return to form features a new bonus DVD t... | | Pianist/vocalist Mitch Woods brings together an unsung inner circle of Rock'n'Roll royalty, the original members of the Fats Domino band. This band features the architects of American music, the veritable founding fathers of Rock'n'Roll who laid the musical bedrock at J&M Studios in New orleans in the early 50s that launched so many stars. Earl Palmer has been the drummer of choice for all the Rock'n'Roll immortals from Fats Domino and Little Richard to Sam Cooke and Ray Charles, Richie Valens and Eddie Cochran to the Everly Brothers. Herb Hardesty played sax with Fats Domino from the very beginning and still plays with him today. Woods reunited these legendary players along with others who still play in the Fats Domino band and composed a batch of original tunes modeled after the original Fats Domino material. Legendary producer, Dave Bartholomew (who co-wrote many of Fats' hits) came in on the project to help produce. Along with a live performance in New Orleans featuring these...
