 | Camper Van Beethoven's first record with bona fide crossover appeal, 1989's Key Lime Pie (Virgin), brought the celebrated indie band into the, ahem, lime light. Not surprising since Key Lime Pie joined David Lowery's playful, ironic songwriting, Morgan Fichter's soaring violin, and Dennis Henderson's artful production. While the percussive cover "Pictures of Matchstick Men" and the chugging "Jack Ruby" have historically gotten the most attention on this record, Camper Van Beethoven gems like "(I Was Born in a) Laundromat" and "All Her Favorite Fruit" should not be overlooked. A classic. --Nick Heil (less)Artist: Camper Van Beethoven | $6 - $14 9 Merchants |

| | CVB always thrilled their fans with their freewheeling iconoclasm. By the time they made Key Lime Pie however, song craft and maturity replaced the band's early more sardonic and mischievous ways, and it's there from which the work for NEW ROMAN TIMES picked up and began. | | Evoking mental imagery of bathing in the sun on a Venice Beach walkway, complete with rollerskating long-legged beauties and trimmed pink poodles, Brother Firetribe's smooth hard rock has that huge American AOR sound no one in Finland has ever even ventured to attempt. Unashamedly taking a bow to their influences, Van Halen, Journey and other chartbusters of old, Brother Firetribe's sound is built on a plethora of melodies most composers wouldn't dare to dream of. In a true eighties' fashion, all the required tools are also applied; killer vocal harmonies and airy keyboard lines that will stick to your head like a misplaced bubble gum. The cherries on the pie are Pekka Heino's smooth, dreamy vocals and Emppu Vuorinen's guitarwork. Also being the guitarist of famed Finnish metal group Nightwish, Emppu's immaculate sense of style and the rich trademark sound of his guitar simply can't be mistaken. | | The man best remembered for "American Pie," his early 1970s epic kiss-off to the rock & roll scene, came back in 1997 to issue his second album of Christmas music. Like Christmas , his 1991 album, this one is filled with songs that everyone should remember. Don McLean may have walked away from the pop music spotlight, but just as years ago he sensitively delivered his tribute "Vincent" to the late Vincent Van Gogh, he now turns a sympathetic ear to "The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)," "Blue Christmas" and "Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!" --Rob O'Connor (less)Hip-O Records | $70 amazon.com |
