 | Matthews' guided dialogues with children show that they consistently and happily develop philosophical trains of thought, evaluate those of others, and try to think things through, often reaching solutions that are essentially the ones propounded by the big people who are lucky enough to be paid for doing it...With careful listening and without distorting preconceptions about what children might or might not be capable of doing, Mr. Matthews has unearthed a seam of would-be wisdom. His open-minded attention to the way children's minds work has also yielded a new concept of childhood intelligence that may bear on the question of children's rights, children's art and the status of literature for children. He argues that the philosophy of childhood should be a respectable branch of philosophy, like the philosophy of science or the philosophy of law. This strikes me as too modest a goal. Mr. Matthews' incisive investigations into the relations between the world of children and the world of adults are too thought-provoking to be confined to one branch of one academic subject...He subjects Jean Piaget's theory of cognitive development and Lawrence Kohlberg's theory of moral development to simple and searching criticisms that make his book essential reading for anybody interested in early childhood education.pSo many questions, such an imagination, endless speculation: the child seems to be a natural philosopher--until the ripe old age of eight or nine, when the spirit of inquiry mysteriously fades. What happened? Was it something we did--or didn't do? Was the child truly the philosophical being he once seemed? Gareth Matthews takes up these concerns in iThe Philosophy of Childhood/i, a searching account of children's philosophical potential and of childhood as an area of philosophical inquiry. Seeking a philosophy that represents the range and depth of children's inquisitive minds, Matthews explores both how children think and how we, as adults, think about them./p@)Që…¸Rÿ¾Û€ (less)Author: Gareth B. | | "Jeffery Smith was living in Missoula, Montana, and was into his eighth year as a psychiatric case manager when his own struggles with clinical depression began. Eventually, all his prescribed antidepressant medications proved ineffective. Unlike many such personal accounts, Where the Roots Reach for Water describes what happened after Smith decided to give them up. Trying to learn how to make a life with his illness, Smith sets out to get at the essence of - using the old term for depression - melancholia. What he learns utterly transforms his life. Deftly woven into his ""personal history"" is a ""natural history"" of this ancient illness - a natural history that surveys, as we might expect, recent neurobiological research and speculation about depression's evolutionary purpose. But Smith also draws on centuries of art, writing, and medical treatises inspired by the illness and its very near kin, the melancholic temperament. His imaginative natural history of melancholia touches on mythology, anthropology, religious history, love and sex, philosophy, and our relationship with landscapes. In addition, Smith tells numerous instructive stories of the men and women - from commoners to artists, from scientists to saints - who fitted their lives to melancholia before the advent of ""seratonin reuptake inhibitors,"" twelve-step groups, or talk therapy, and he contemplates why contemporary America has become the ""Prozac nation.""" | | As the culture of commercial capitalism came to dominate nineteenth-century New England, it changed people's ideas about how the world functioned, the nature of their work, their relationships to one another, and even the way they conceived of themselves as separate individuals. Drawing on the work of the last twenty years in New England social history, Mary Cayton argues that Ralph Waldo Emerson's work and career, when seen in the context of the momentous changes in the culture and economics of the region, reveal many of the tensions and contradictions inherent in the new capitalist social order. In exploring the genesis of liberal humanism as a calling in the United States, this case study implicitly poses questions about its assumptions, its aspirations, and its failings.Cayton traces the ways in which the social circumstances of Emerson's Boston gave rise to his philosophy of natural organicism, his search for an appropriate definition of the intellectual's role within society, and his exhortations to individuals to distrust the norms and practices of the mass culture that was emerging. She addresses the historical context of Emerson's emergence as a writer and orator and undertakes to describe the Federalism and Unitarianism in which Emerson grew up, explaining why he eventually rejected them in favor of romantic transcendentalism.Cayton demonstrates how Emerson's thought was affected by the social pressures and ideological constructs that launched the new cultural discourse of individualism. A work of intellectual history and American studies, this book explores through Emerson's example the ways in which intellectuals both make their cultures and are made by them. | | The phenomenon of confabulation -- the tendency to construct plausible-sounding but false answers and believe that they are true -- and what it can tell us about the human mind and human nature. Some neurological patients exhibit a striking tendency to confabulate -- to construct false answers to a question while genuinely believing that they are telling the truth. A stroke victim, for example, will describe in detail a conference he attended over the weekend when in fact he has not left the hospital. Normal people, too, sometimes have a tendency to confabulate; rather than admitting "I don't know," some people will make up an answer or an explanation and express it with complete conviction. In iBrain Fiction/i, William Hirstein examines confabulation and argues that its causes are not merely technical issues in neurology or cognitive science but deeply revealing about the structure of the human intellect.br /br /Hirstein describes confabulation as the failure of a normal checking or censoring process in the brain -- the failure to recognize that a false answer is fantasy, not reality. Thus, he argues, the creative ability to construct a plausible-sounding response and some ability to check that response are separate in the human brain. Hirstein sees the dialectic between the creative and checking processes -- "the inner dialogue" -- as an important part of our mental life. In constructing a theory of confabulation, Hirstein integrates perspectives from different fields, including philosophy, neuroscience, and psychology to achieve a natural mix of conceptual issues usually treated by philosophers with purely empirical issues; information about the distribution of certain blood vessels in the prefrontal lobes of the brain, for example, or the behavior of split-brain patients can shed light on the classic questions of philosophy of mind, including questions about the function of consciousness. | | In the sixteenth century, the kings of Europe were like gods to their subjects. Within 150 years, however, this view of monarchs had altered dramatically: a king was the human, visible sign of the rational state. How did such a momentous shift in political understanding come about? This sweeping book explores the changing cultural significance of the power of European kings from the assassination of France's Henry III to the death of Louis XIV. Paul Kleber Monod draws on political history, political philosophy, anthropology, sociology, and literature to understand the relationship between kings and their political subjects and the interplay between monarchy and religion. He also makes use of 35 paintings and statues to illuminate the changing public images of kings.pDiscussing monarchies throughout Europe, from Britain to Russia, Monod tells how sixteenth-century kings and queens were thought to heal the sick with a touch, were mediators between divine authority and the Christian self in quasi-religious ceremonies, and were seen as ideal mirrors, of human identity. By 1715, the sacred authority of the monarchy had been supplanted by an ideology fusing internal moral responsibility with external obedience to an abstract political authority. Subjects were expected to identify not with a sacred king but with the natural person of the ruler. No longer divine, the kings and queens of the Enlightenment took up a new, more human place in the hearts and minds of their subjects. | | The ideal solution for all people who are looking for improved performance, and not just in sport - creatine monohydrateThis natural food supplement very effectively optimizes supply to the muscles, and increases performance, stamina, strength and wellbeing. We are filling a gap in the market and setting new standards: taking the supplement in liquid form enables the body to utilize creatine monohydrate in a particularly rapid way without the need for the 'loading' phase. The daily requirement of the nutrient can be simply and easily administered using the enclosed dispenser. Taking small daily doses is also kind on the stomach. Our product philosophy is based on the 'micro mineral system (MMS)', which makes it possible for us to produce stable liquid plant extracts with particularly good storage properties. Scientists have hitherto assumed that the stability of creatine monohydrate in liquid form leaves much to be desired, as it soon breaks down into creatinine - a product which has no benefits for the consumer. Latest scientific discoveries made by the University of Groningen in the Netherlands and the company 'Arotop food creation' based in Mainz, Germany, have removed all remaining doubts concerning the stability of 'Dimaxx Muscle Creatine Plus'. Both instances have developed a validated process for examining creatine monohydrate, which should be of interest to every health-conscious consumer: in tests, the shelf-life of the product 'Muscle Creatine Plus' submitted by Dimaxx, proved to be between six months and one year depending on storage. At 3-5 percent, the decay of creatine monohydrate into creatinine was negligible. Further tests into a shelf-life of up to 2 years have been commissioned. Creatine monohydrate also receives top grades from a nutritional point of view: at a time of intense discussion surrounding BSE and all substances of meat origin, our 100% vegetable, non-chemical product creatine monohydrate offers consumers the security they expect.Directions for use: non workout days: take 5ml in the morning and 5 ml in the evening on emty stomach workout days: take 10ml 30 minutes before workoutSupplement facts:Serving size 5mlAmount per 5ml:creatine monohydrate serum 500 mg extracted from plantsother ingredients: sodium, manganese stearate, silica, glucose, water (less) | $40 Supplements To Go |

Boutique amplifiers just became the domain of every guitar player out there. Take a listen and your jaw will drop. This little, low-watt powerhouse rivals $800.00 snob boxes no problem. The Valve Junior is vintage tone and crunch in an impressively affordable package. Perfect for recording, live, mic’d use and for practice when space is limited but sacrificing tone isn’t an option. Epiphone Valve Junior Features 5 Watts, Class A 12AX7, EL84 Single-Ended 8 inch Special Design Speaker Boutique goes Newtique The Valve Junior uses true vintage design philosophies to achieve incredible tone, warmth and responsiveness. Add that to Epiphone’s ongoing mission to deliver the best value in fine instruments and you’ve got an unbeatable combination. And don’t let the 5 watts fool you. The Valve Junior is LOUD. Here’s why: Class A One knob delivers Class A output through a single-ended circuit that responds to your play the way a compact amp is supposed to. Class A amplification delivers constant power from the tube, creating more responsiveness and volume. Keep it at about 3 and you’ll get punchy, clear tone that makes the strings of your guitar feel like they know what you’re going to play before you even hit them. The response is quick and lively. Turn it up to 10 and you get a classic crunch that’s gusty without saturating the harmonics. Single Ended Single ended amplifiers sound full , providing rich, luscious overall tonal coloration with enough clarity to bring out the nuances of your guitar and playing. Part of what we call volume is how much of the tonal spectrum is making it through to the ear. Fuller delivery of the harmonics being produced deliver more meaningful volume. At lower wattages, they’re coveted for a natural break up when turned to higher volumes, resulting in a creamy distortion that makes modern gain sound sterile and flat. Durable Construction High quality metalwork, detachable power cable, rugged, musical speaker and a lot of attention to detail make the Valve Junior an uncompromised and serious piece of gear. A 5 year warranty backs up Epiphone's commitment. CLICK HERE for a review (PDF) from Vintage Guitar Magazine October, 2005.
