| | Comedia de la libertad de España por Bernardo del Carpio, a play written in 1579 by Juan de la Cueva, is based upon events in the life of the legendary hero of the Spanish Middle Ages. Professor Burton demonstrates in this first complete study of the play that Cueva goes beyond the mere presentation of Bernardo del Carpio and his victory over Charlemagne and the French army at Roncesvalles. The study is important in the criticism of the early Spanish Theater because it shows that Cueva imbued his play with many levels of meaning, as the exultation of a national hero, as a political allegory of Philip lI's attempt to add Portugal to the Spanish crown, as a triumph of virtue over vice, and, at its heart, as a statement of faith in which forgiveness and the promise of redemption follow sin and repentance. Burton deserves thanks for his interesting analysis of Cueva's style. Future Bernardo studies will have to take this work into consideration.Anthony J. Cárdenas, Journal of Hispanic Philology. | | DIVTowards the end of the sixteenth century, King Philip, ruler of the conjoint global empires of Spain and Portugal, received advice from many quarters, not least with regard to the attacks on the empires by other west European nations. Manoel de Andrada Castel Blanco, an obscure cleric who had worked in Brazil and Africa and who lamented the marine disasters and enemy incursions of the previous half-century, wrote c.1590 a tract of advice which has remained unpublished until the present annotated edition. His proposals for the defense of the imperial sea routes, which include references to localities as far apart as Bahia, Aden, Siam and Magellan Strait, make him one of the earliest global strategists. The tract, despite its patent defects of thought and presentation, gives the reader something of the feel of the period as it was experienced by those Iberians who, although outside the imperial administration, were capable of grasping the intense excitement of novel global venture and the inevitable accompanying anxieties and alarms./div (less) | $4 A1Books |

| | DIVDIVWhen Neil Kinnock became Labour's leader in 1983, the party was at its lowest ebb since the war. Internal wrangling, problems of presentation and personality, as well as a formidable foe in Margaret Thatcher conspired to keep Labour out of office for another 14 years. In that time, however, the party was transformed, and the changes began under Neil Kinnock. Modernizers from Tony Blair to Philip Gould have paid tribute to his vital role in vanquishing the loony left and moving the party to the center ground, and Kinnock's post-Labour career at the European Commission has won him new respect and made him a key player./DIV/DIV (less) | $43 A1Books |
