| | The creation of television stands out as a defining moment in history. It began as a pastime for the well-to-do but with the ubiquity and affordability of the tv set it quickly made it a part of everyday life for everyone. The Quiz Shows of the 1950s thrived in this golden age of television and thrilled audiences, young and old, with cliffhanger questions and split second answers. All the fun was moderated by smooth hosts like Groucho Marx and Johnny Carson, who managed to slip in double-entendres and censor-testing gags between the brain-teasers. Watch the Original Reality Shows with the TV Guide Quiz Shows Collection and relive television history and intelligent entertainment with a touch of 50's class. Some shows in this collection include: You Bet Your Life with Groucho Marx, Who Do You Trust with Johnny Carson and Ed McMahon, Masquerade Party with Eddie Bracken and Beat the Clock with Bud Collyer. | | Spend a December evening with Judy Garland! This episode from her CBS - TV show, recorded December 6, 1963 captures the great entertainer and her kids, Liza Minnelli and Lorna and Joe Luft, in a one-hour songfest taking place in the family living room. Garland is mostly a spectator, encouraging the 17-year-old Liza and the younger kids, Lorna (who displays a big voice on "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" and went on to have her own performing career) and the less-assured Joe (who sings one of the many non- seasonal selections, "Where Is Love," during which an anxious Garland can be glimpsed mouthing the words along with him). But she does sing two of her most memorable film songs -"Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and "Over the Rainbow"- plus "Little Drops of Rain" and she can still kick up her heels. Even one of her flubs produces one of the best moments: she joins Mel Tormé at the piano for his "Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)," and when she botches the l... | | Spike TV's first season of The Joe Schmo Show is a real-life variation on the Jim Carrey comedy The Truman Show , in which Carrey played a man unaware he is the star of a television series, living on an enormous set and surrounded by actors playing family, co-workers, neighbors, etc. Joe Schmo fools a gregarious, likable 27-year-old fellow, Matt Kennedy Gould, into believing he's part of the cast of a reality-TV program called Lap of Luxury , competing for a $100,000 prize by surviving humiliating trials and those inevitable, once-per-week evictions of unlucky contestants. What Gould doesn't know is that his competitors--all living in the same house under the watchful eye of an ubiquitous production crew--are all actors playing sundry reality-TV stereotypes: the token gay guy, the good-looking sweetheart, the good-looking bitch, the clown, Mr. Macho, the borderline-pariah, etc. The eight episodes in The Joe Schmo Show: Season One Uncensored look and sound like any other reality gi... | | Though plenty of comedians have utilized a man-child persona in the past (from Jerry Lewis and Pinky Lee to Pee Wee Herman), TV sketch comic Andy Milonakis takes the schtick one step further because he physically resembles a child (he's actually in his 30s, and his appearance is reportedly due to a health issue). That incongruity lends an extra layer of lunacy to his already bizarre, freeform humor--is that really a 12-year-old boy playing with ham or harassing elderly strangers on the street?--and undoubtedly accounts for the popularity of his show. Summarizing the 10 episodes of season 1 is nearly impossible, since there's no narrative flow to the program. Andy, his dog, and his pals zip from one surreal scenario to another with little time for the viewer to catch a breath between laughs (or stunned reactions). If any structure can be applied to the show, episodes seem to be divided between "sketches" (Andy wrestles his toaster when it burns his breakfast; Andy jumps into his tele... | | 840 minutes (that's fourteen hours, including various bonus features). Four discs. Twelve shows. Eleven famous guests. The Dick Cavett Show – Comic Legends boasts some big numbers, but what it doesn't have, surprisingly, is a whole lotta laughs. The lineup is certainly impressive, from old school stalwarts like Groucho Marx, Bob Hope, Lucille Ball, Jack Benny, and George Burns to relative youngsters (at least at the time; the shows were recorded from the late '60s to the mid-'70s) like Bill Cosby, Woody Allen, and the Smothers Brothers. But this is not a procession of mirth-meisters coming out and doing five or ten minutes of one-liners and standup shtick. There are no performances, per se; like guests on Leno, Letterman, or any other TV talk show, the "legends" converse with and are interviewed by the host, sometimes by themselves, sometimes in the company of other celebs. This casual format yields decidedly mixed results. Take Groucho. Pushing 80 at the time of the first of hi... (less) Actors: Fred Foy | $15 - $40 13 Merchants |
| | The sequel to Super Milk-Chan (a 1998 cartoon segment on Flyer TV ), The Super Milk-Chan Show suggests a mixture of Excel Saga , The Powerpuff Girls , and South Park . The title character is a venal, "super-deformed" little girl whose language is often bluer than her hair. Accompanied by light bulb-shaped robot Tetusko and a slug named Hanage ("nose hair"), Milk runs around solving crimes at the behest of Mr. President. The minimal, recycled animation, flat colors, and thick outlines echo the look of Powerpuff Girls . Although obviously intended as a spoof of magical girl shows, The Super Milk-Chan Show isn't particularly funny. The pacing is flat, the characters are uniformly unlikable, and the shtick of a little moppet who swears like a stevedore grows old very quickly. The series is packaged oddly, with fake behind-the-scenes footage at distributor ADV Films intercut with the animation on the "100% Whole" disc. The second disc of "Original Japanese Episodes" includes both English... (less) Actors: Super Milk | $3 - $30 5 Merchants |
