Patrick Creadon's I.O.U.S.A. documents the efforts of two concerned citizens, former US Comptroller General Dave Walker and Concord Coalition Director Robert Bixby, to explain how America racked up over $9.5 trillion in debt and what we can do to stem the tide. Based on the book Empire of Debt by William Bonner and Executive Producer Addison Wiggin, Wordplay 's Creadon combines Walker and Bixby's "Fiscal Wake-Up Tour" with observations from former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan, former Treasury Secretaries Robert Rubin and Paul O’Neill, superstar CEO Warren Buffett, and student activists. The information flows with ease and the clips from Saturday Night Live and The Daily Show add levity to an undeniably dark and timely topic, but the narrative rests on a long list of facts and figures, lea... | | A made-for-TV movie originally broadcast on VH1, this film bio of the Monkees casts look-alikes as the first made-for-TV rock band (today's equivalent: O-Town). Told in broad strokes that hit the highlights, the film recounts how a TV producer (played by Colin Ferguson) decided to create a TV version of the Beatles by casting cute actors (musicianship was only a secondary requirement) as rock stars for a weekly comedy series. But surprise--producer Don Kirshner (Wallace Langham) was able to manufacture musical hits and the mock band became a rock band with musical ambitions of its own. The actors who play the Monkees look (but don't sound) like their characters, as do actors who were hired to play the Beatles and Jimi Hendrix, among others. Still, with the exception of a little pot-smoking, there's nothing particularly juicy in a tell-all that doesn't tell nearly as much as you'd like. --Marshall Fine (less)New Concorde | $13 amazon.com |

| | "Hooked" is a compelling and artful documentary by filmmakers Michael Skolnik and William O’Neill, which traces the life of Demetrius Mitchell, who, at 5-feet-9, built his legendary playground status by several public exhibits of his extraordinary talent, such as jumping over the top of a Volkswagen car and slam dunking a basketball. He is considered by several NBA All-Stars to be the greatest player to never reach the NBA, due to extraordinary circumstances, drug addiction and unfortunate life choices. "Hook" Mitchell grew up playing ball with childhood friends Gary Payton of the Los Angeles Lakers and Jason Kidd of the New Jersey Nets Unlike his peers, Hook lived in an unstable environment, lacked guidance and made an endless number of wrong choices. He was heavily influenced by the drug and crime-ravaged streets of West Oakland which led him to the California Men’s Penal Colony instead of the NBA. While under the influence of drugs, he was arrested and imprisoned for holdin...
