 | Riverdance , the Irish hard-shoe sensation that took PBS viewers by storm, underwent its second incarnation with Live from New York City , a 1996 performance filmed at Radio City Music Hall. While most of the attributes from 1995's Riverdance: The Show remain--the dazzling ensemble choreography, Bill Whelan's energetic score, and the New Age-y view of Celtic mythology--the most significant difference is at the top, where Colin Dunne replaced bombastic lead dancer Michael Flatley. Though lacking Flatley's bravura, Dunne is a superb technician who works well with Flatley's former co-lead, Jean Butler. Flamenco dancer Maria Pagis returns, as do the Riverdance Singers (formerly known as Anuna) with soloist Katie McMahon and the orchestra with fiery fiddler Eileen Ivers. About a half-hour longer than the 1995 original, Live from New York City expands upon the second act's theme of the Irish leaving their homeland for other parts of the world. "Lift the Wings" becomes a set piece... (less)Artist: Jean Butler, Colin Dunne, María Pagés, Katie McMahon, Morgan Crowley | $49 - $68 2 Merchants |
| | Ex-Golden Gloves fighter Danny Kenny has it all worked out. He'll turn pro to bankroll his brother's dream of writing a symphonic paean to the teeming city where they both live: New York. But life pulls the sidewalk out from under Danny when he's blinded during a brutal 15-round welterweight title bout. James Cagney plays Danny in this heart-tugging melodrama co-starring Ann Sheridan, Anthony Quinn, film-debuting Arthur Kennedy and in a rare acting turn before becoming a director, Elia Kazan. Among familiar studio players, there's an unbilled one: a vivid backlot and rear-screen Manhattan. "Sometimes we wonder," The New York Times' Bosley Crowther wrote, "whether it wasn't really the Warner brothers who got New York from the Indians, so diligent and devoted have they been in feeling the great city's pulse." | | In the film that began her legendary career, Jean Harlow stars in this romantic comedy directed by Academy Award winner Frank Capra (Best Director: It Happened One Night, 1935; Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, 1937; You Can't Take It With You, 1939). Written to showcase her talent, looks and charm, Platinum Blonde is a glorious spoof of the newspaper business in New York City during the Depression; Ann Schuyler (Harlow), a wealthy socialite, meets reporter Stew Smith (Robert Williams) and the two fall madly in love. The comedy begins as she tries to transform him from a ruffian newsman into a convincing gentleman. Stew, who is quick with wisecracks, is slow to realize the dangers of being a kept man. At first, he likes the idle life of the rich, but there's trouble in paradise. Soon this Cinderella Man turns the social register upside down with his mocking repartee. To his rescue is Gallagher (Loretta Young), a sympathetic friend and co-worker at the newspaper. She comforts and consoles Stew and, in classic Capra style, helps him right into Harlow's own arms. | | Get ready for a saddle-bustin' double dose of The Duke ! Included in this exclusive Double Feature DVD are two feature films from the late, great John Wayne. Dark Command and A Lady Takes A Chance are two Wild West romances that are sure to rein you in!Dark Command: John Wayne is good guy Bob Seton in Raoul Walsh's star-studded thriller set in the dark days before the Civil War. During this strained period in America's history, emotions run high and tension fills the air, especially during political contests. In the race for Federal Marshal of Kansas, Seton defeats William Cantrell (Walter Pidgeon), causing increased animosity between these two powerful figures. Their mutual ill will peaks when Cantrell steals Seton's girl (Claire Trevor), manipulating her into marriage to get even with Seton. Their rivalry reaches dangerous proportions when Seton exposes Cantrell and his guerrillas who have been raiding both Union and Confederate lines. Roy Rogers co-stars in one of his earliest film roles.A Lady Takes A Chance: Finding men had never been a problem for city girl Molly Trousdale (Jean Arthur) finding the right man is another matter. And women have never been a problem for cowboy bachelor Duke Hutkins (John Wayne) until they want to marry him. If it's true that opposites attract, they're obviously made for each other. When Molly sets out from New York on a cross-country bus tour, she just wants to see America. But her plans take an unexpected turn out West, when she collides (literally!) with Duke while he's competing at the rodeo. He assumes she's just another pretty gal who'll fall into his arms, but she's a lady who won't be roped easily by a brawling, rough-and-ready cowboy. Jean Arthur shows the spunk that made her one of the biggest stars of Hollywood's Golden Era, and John Wayne is at his most charming when he falls for her against his better judgment. So get ready for the dust to fly when these two screen legends star in a truly classic romantic comedy, A Lady Takes A Chance! (less)Lions Gate | $9 Buy.com |
