| We could not find any results for islamic boys names showing results only for islamic boys | | In the remote foothills of southern Sudan thousands of boys live together in a place called Natinga. They are displaced people. The bitter civil war raging in Sudan has claimed the lives of an estimated 1.5 million people and driven more than 4 million others from their homes. Among them are countless children, many of whom have no home left to return to when and if the conflict is resolved. Natinga is the temporary refuge for about 2,000 boys, ranging in age from 8 to 18, from many different tribes. The camp is protected by the Sudanese People's Liberation Army, a group who is engaged in a fierce battle with the Islamic Arab regime that took control of the Sudanese government in 1983. The rebels claim to want to educate the boys for peace and self-government. School supplies are scarce, however, as are basic necessities such as food and medicine. In addition to the war, disease and famine are constant threats. It is unclear whether these boys will ever return to what remains of theirFar from media images of Africa as safari adventure and famine, this photo-essay brings us close to the experience of refugee children by focusing on the boys in one school in the southern Sudan. Walgren, a Dallas photojournalist, spent three months at the school in 1994, and her color photos and vivid text make us see what daily life is like for these individual young people driven from home by civil war. | | The Silk Road was once the main artery for the exchange of goods, culture, and art between China, the Middle East, and Europe. It was along this timeless highway that the great religions of Buddhism and Islam were to enter China. In Bazaars of Chinese Turkestan, acclaimed photographer and filmmaker Peter Yung provides an intriguing photographic essay that travels down the Old Silk Road to the present-day marketplaces of Chinese Turkestan.brWith photographs of great beauty, accompanied by an evocative text, Yung takes us on a fascinating journey through the Taklimakan Desert--the Desert of Death--to the flourishing oases of Turkestan, whose inhabitants learned long ago how to turn the sandy wastes into rich farmland and vineyards. We meet merchants selling yarns and dyes, silk and rugs, jade (fished from the rivers) and gold, daggers and shish-kebab, melons and pilaf. And we get a sense of the colorful people who visit the bazaar, the Uygar men with shaved heads and the women in bright silk dresses, billiard players in the open air, young boys watching an old man make paper beneath a trellis of grape vines. And along the way, Yung provides an illuminating commentary on the region's history, describes the legendary trading cities of Kashi, Shache, and Hotan, and discusses current efforts to maintain the Islamic heritage and identity of Xinjiang.brBazaars of Chinese Turkestan takes us to a world few of us knew existed. It is a mesmerizing book that will captivate everyone who yearns to travel to far-off places, to leave civilization behind and explore the unknown byways of the Old Silk Road.brbrAbout the Author:brPeter Yung is a distinguished photographer and film director. He is currently senior lecturer of film at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.br (less) | $56 A1Books |

For those who survived this traumatic ordeal and found their way to refugee camps, som were chosen to participate in a resettlement program in America--a distant place so presumably full of hope and opportunity that the Sudanese sometimes call it Heaven. | | Reita Piecuch transforms field recordings from her extensive travels through south Asia into dense, static-barbled walls of drone through a variety of arcane & archaic methods of sound transformation. Calls to prayer from the Islamic muezzin become movements so antarctic they slow the heart. Disintegrated loops of fast-talking boys on the street become jittery Ata Kak rhythms, masterfully meshed w/ slow drifts of muffled piano. | | A visually stunning, culturally fascinating, politically timely film based on the director’s own childhood, THE CLAY BIRD has been called one of the most important works to come out of the Muslim world. Set against the backdrop of Pakistan during the turbulent 1960s, a family is ripped apart by religious beliefs and civil war. Anu, a shy young boy from rural East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), is sent away by his father Kazi, an orthodox Muslim, to a Madrasah. Far from his family and the warmth of his region’s vibrant Hindu festivities, Anu struggles to adapt to the Islamic school’s harsh monastic life. As political divisions in the country intensify, a split develops between moderate and extremist forces within the Madrasah. In the village, these same tensions create a growing divide between the stubborn Kazi and his increasingly independent wife, Ayesha. THE CLAY BIRD is an authentic and loving portrait of Bangladesh, showing the country in all its color and complexity – its s...
