| | Kodaly wrote very little orchestral music over the course of his long life. He was best known as composer of choral music. Janos Ferencsik, the great Hungarian conductor of his generation, was a lifelong proponent of Kodaly's music. He conducted all of the orchestral works, and not just the popular Háry János Suite and Galanta Dances . Of course, he did the famous stuff very well too, as this performance of Háry János proves. But he also championed the rarely heard Concerto for Orchestra, a charming and vivacious composition that has failed to reach an international public for the simple reason that it can't compete with Bartók's similarly titled masterpiece. Well guess what? Kodály's came first, and as you can hear for yourself, it's worth the attention. --David Hurwitz (less)Artist: | $15 - $20 4 Merchants |
| | This sunny and brilliantly played disc gives you Kodaly's three most popular orchestral works, all in supercharged performances overflowing with color and excitement. Given the fact that Georg Solti, a real Hungarian, spent the better part of his life at the helm of this very orchestra, it's curious that it took Neeme Järvi (an Estonian) to make an all-Kodaly record with them. In any event, circumstances could hardly have turned out better. Järvi pushes the orchestra hard--the Galanta Dances really fly--but Chicago is one of those super-virtuoso orchestras that loves a challenge, and you can practically hear them taking Järvi's dare and running with it. A disc that's pure fun. -- David Hurwitz (less)Artist: | $10 - $18 5 Merchants |
| | Kodály's reputation rests on a handful of orchestral music ( Háry János and the Dances of Galánta ), and on his world-famous work as a teacher. The main body of his music was choral, and because most of it is in Hungarian, it doesn't get performed too often outside of Hungary. These two large-scale religious works, however, deserve to be better known. They are every bit as fine as the very popular Psalmus hungaricus , and just as rewarding to sing and play. Kodály's study of folk song means that his music is always approachable, always fresh, and never outstays its welcome. These performances with native Hungarian performers are not likely to be bettered. --David Hurwitz (less)Artist: | $15 - $20 6 Merchants |

| | "If God must break your leg He will at least teach you to limp – so it is said in Africa. This book is my poor limping – a modest account that cannot tell every story that deserves telling. I have seen and heard many things in Darfur that have broken my heart. I bring the stories to you because I know most people want others to have good lives and, when they understand the situation, they will do what they can to bend the world back toward kindness. This is when human beings, I believe, are most admirable."brbrThe young life of Daoud Hari – his friends call him David – has been one of bravery and mesmerizing adventure. As a translator and the guide of choice to media, the US Embassy, and the United Nations, Hari became a vital link to the outside world, a living witness to the brutal genocide underway in Darfur. Most of the reporting on the great tragedies of our day has been written by journalists, and after-the-fact. Rarely, in a conflict of this magnitude, has there been an eyewitness voice to the events as they are still happening. Daoud Hari is that voice.brbrbThe Translator/bis a suspenseful, harrowing and deeply moving memoir of how one person can make a difference in the world – an on-the-ground account of one of the biggest stories of our time."A beautifully written and often poetic story of personal courage and redemption in the face of the worst that we can be. Recorded between May 4, 1936 and March 10, 1948. Includes liner notes by Dan Morgenstern. This collection serves as a good introduction to the famous Gypsy guitarist, including as it does examples of the original Hot Club of France quintet with Stephane Grappelli, solo pieces, duets, trios, groups including reed or brass players, and two encounters between Django and ensembles of American musicians. The emphasis tends to be on Django's early Hot Club work, represented by five tunes on this CD, but several others here retain a Hot Club era feeling, particularly the duet with Quintet bassist Louis Vola and the Grappelli-less trio of ""I'll See You In My Dreams."" The debate continues to rage over whether the postwar reunion of Reinhardt with Grappelli ever came close to their triumphs of the '30s; the last five cuts will allow you to judge for yourself. And if you're looking for the roots of the ""New Acoustic Music"" as perpetrated by David Grisman, Mark O'Connor et al, check out ""Minor Swing."" Like so many tunes that became jazz standards, it was played at a much more relaxed tempo in its original 1937 incarnation than it is usually performed today."
