| | 112 would be just another quartet of smooth crooners if it weren't for the simple fact that their Bad Boy brand of R&B funk is so damn irresistible. "Love Me" opens with the directive, "Do that Puff Daddy shit, son!" and indeed you can pick up the Puffy one's fingerprints all over Room 112--Mase cameos on "Love Me," and Lil' Kim shows up on the slamming "The Only One," a surefire dance-floor hit with an infectious bass line reminiscent of the Bad Boy "Only You" remix. The ballads are as wrinkle-free as expected, but "Your Letter" is poignant. Check into Room 112 , and you won't want to leave. --Rebecca Wallwork (less)Artist: 112 | $8 - $21 11 Merchants |
| | Having already achieved phenomenal success and critical acclaim through seven releases with Real Music since 1996, 2002 has still managed to surpass itself with their eighth, This Moment Now. Twenty years ago Pamela and Randy lived for awhile in different parts of the country, and part of their staying in touch was a steady stream of love letters to each other. They wanted to do an album focused upon love and as the work began to grow, the music responded in the form not only of love between two people but also as a vehicle expressing the great love that exists in all living things. The music captures an enchanted moment, an opportunity to be free of the mental chatter that takes us out of the now and to cocoon in the awareness of love. This momentous album features lush strings, soaring flutes and guitars, grand piano and dense vocal arrangements, creating the signature sound that rocketed 2002 to #3 and has kept them on the Billboard Charts for over 6 years. | | Based on Freeway’s introduction to the rap world (a verse on "1-900-Hustler" from Jay-Z’s The Dynasty , where he provides a tutorial on how to deal drugs effectively), it’s a challenge not to think that he’s just another in a long line of "devout" MCs who debauch with the best of them. But few of the others rap with the same sense of urgency or have such a distinctively mesmerizing yet whiny vocal drone. On "Free," Freeway reminds us why we endured a full year of delays before this debut hit the streets, flipping schizophrenic flows over a pounding Just Blaze beat and an even catchier female vocal sample. You may love his off-kilter flow or you may hate it (think Ol’ Dirty Bastard), but you can't deny that Freeway has rhyme skills, especially on burners like "What We Do," his shady street-life redemption opus featuring thug adviser Beanie Sigel. His storytelling capabilities arguably rival that of his mentor Jay-Z on "Life," an open letter to a neighborhood homey who’s ... (less)Artist: Freeway | $9 - $21 10 Merchants |
| | "A life-changing moment fixes the beginning of Brosseau's brilliant album...a love letter to what was lost [and] a series of snapshots from a childhood that ended when the dikes gave way. The understated melody [and] plaintive voice...sound as if they come from some faraway time." - CHICAGO TRIBUNE Since the 2005 release of What I Mean To Say Is Goodbye, Tom Brosseau has garnered much acclaim Chord and Harp as well as John Doe and Bonnie Raitt. On the heels of this success comes a re-release of Brosseau's 2001 CD The Blue Record, which has been unavailable for several years. All the songs have been re-mastered, and Brosseau has added five bonus tracks, three of which are previously unreleased. "Used to Own a Rowing Boat" is an outtake from the Goodbye recording sessions with Sam Jones, while "The Young and the Free" is a 2003 on-air recording from KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic with Nic Harcourt. | | "Fun Lovin' Criminals: Huey (vocals, guitar); Fast, Steve. Recorded at Steve Rosenthal's Magic Shop, New York, New York from April 25 to May 20, 1995. This Australian version of debut album from the NYC Alternative Rap outfit, often compared to the Beastie Boys and G Love and Special Sauce, contains two bonus tracks, ""I Can't Get With That (Schmoov..."" and ""Coney Island Girl."" The Fun Lovin' Criminals debut release, COME FIND YOURSELF, is both a catchy love letter to the trio's New York City roots and a mid-'90s rap rock party album. Vocalist and guitarist Hugh Morgan, keyboardist and bassist Brian Leiser, and original drummer Steve Borgovini met at New York City's famed Limelight nightclub in the early '90s and started as a stand-in for bands who failed to show up. From that point on, Fun Lovin' Criminals cultivated their hip-hop beats, bluesy rhythms, and pop-culture themed rhymes. Heavily dominating the lyrical content are references to gritty urban living, samples from Tarantino movies, and send-ups of organized crime, as exemplified on the track ""King of New York,"" boasting the sing-song chorus ""La Di Da Di, Free John Gotti."" Even though the band touches on dark themes, the music is energetic and funky enough to keep it from being too subversive. In the end, COME FIND YOURSELF is a perfectly crafted summertime party album.Rolling Stone (4/4/96, p.60) - 3 Stars (out of 5) - ""...using samples, loops, and scratches--with standard funk bass and beats--FLC stake a larger claim on hip-hop tools than G. Love [& Special Sauce] ever attempted..."" Q (7/96, p.110) - 4 Stars (out of 5) - ""...a vibrant splatterfest of urban hip hop, full of stomping beats, razor sharp ribald lyrics, fresh and frazzled samples and a compellingly crunchy set of melodies....They play fast and loose with wise-guy iconography against a crisp and bouncy backbeat..."" NME (Magazine) (12/21-28/96, pp.66-67) - Ranked #21 in NME's 1996 critic's poll. NME (Magazine) (6/29/96, p.54) - 8 (out of 10) - ""...Where there should be grimaces, there are grins. Where there should be realism, there is surrealism....shooting out increasing bizarre shades of nonsense...as blissfully screwed up as it is listenable..."""
