Powder can be consumed by sprinkling it over your food or mixing it with a syrup such as maple or chocolate. You could also mix it with orange juice. The citric acid in the orange juice will help to mask any unpleasant powder tastes. Other common names: Cassia Bark, Canton Cassia, Bastard Cinnamon, Chinese Cinnamon, Tramboon, Cassia Seed, Canel, Chakunda, Cassia Aromaticum, Rou Gui Cassia is a warming tonic, similar in action to cinnamon, and acts as a stimulant for the digestive tract that eases nausea, indigestion, vomiting, dyspepsia and flatulence. It has also been used by both Oriental and Western herbalists to treat diarrhea, excessive menstrual bleeding and uterine hemorrhage. Important new research indicates that daily consumption may lead to dramatic reductions in blood sugar levels, cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood. The herb may even warm your hands and feet too! History: The Cassia tree is an ornamental evergreen that is indigenous to Burma and South China, with other species native to Sri Lanka, Java, Malaysia and other parts of Southeast Asia, and it has been cultivated in many other tropical climates of the world, including the Americas and West Indies. The genus, Cinnamomum, produces two different commodities, camphor and cinnamon or Cassia. The tree grows to approximately twenty-five feet in height (but is kept at about ten feet in cultivation) and bears lance-shaped leaves and small yellow flowers that bloom in early summer. Cassia grows both wild and cultivated in hot, wet climates in a minimum of fifty-nine degrees Fahrenheit, and thrives in moist, well-drained soil in sun or partial shade. Cassia is one of the oldest spices known to mankind, first recorded in China, as kwei, in 2700 B.C., in the Shen Nong Herbal; and in Egypt, in 1600 B.C., Cassia's aromatic bark is removed in short lengths when mature and dried for use as a spice and in herbal preparations; and the buds, which resemble cloves, are unripe when dried. Cassia is similar to cinnamon (and often sold ground as cinnamon) but differs in strength (not quite as lively) and appearance (rougher and thicker). Cinnamon is sweeter and more subtle in flavor, but although Cassia is stronger and spicier, in many countries the two are used interchangeably. Try it to build resistance against virus, infection, the common cold and macular degeneration, among many other ailments. Much research has been done in recent years, and numerous immunostimulating qualities have been attributed to this wonderful fungus. History: The wild Shiitake Mushroom is a light amber fungus that is native to Japan, China and other Asian countries, and is now widely cultivated throughout the world, including the United States. The caps have nearly ragged gills and an in-rolled margin when young, and they are covered with a delicate white flocking. The mushrooms are frequently found on downed hardwood trees and have been used as a food and medicinal source for over three thousand years in the Far East. Legend claims that Shiitake was given by the aboriginal people of Japan to their emperor, Chuai, around the year 200, but they were used long before that in China. In the Orient, several types of mushrooms have been used for centuries to maintain health, preserve youth and increase longevity. Wu Ri, a famous Chinese physician from the Ming Dynasty (A.D.1368-1644), described Shiitake's ability to increase energy, cure colds and eliminate worms. Japanese physicians have long used lentinan's immune-stimulating capabilities in cancer treatments, and modern Japanese physicians use it to treat viral infections. Now popular in the United States as a tasty alternative to the blander varieties more commonly found in food markets, there is enormous interest in the Shiitake mushroom, and much research is being conducted into the possible great health benefits that may be derived from it. Some of the constituents in Shiitake include fatty acids (largely unsaturated), over thirty different enzymes. proteins (containing all the essential amino acids and non-essential amino acids), eritadenine, ergothioneine, vita (less)Herbal Extracts Plus | $954 Kalyx.com |

Other common names: Giant Crape Myrtle, Crape Myrtle, Crepe Myrtle Banaba is said to possess insulin-like properties and has long been used in folk medicine to control blood sugar levels. Moreover, Banaba may also be a healthy way to support a leaner and more slender body through appetite control and sugar reduction. History: Banaba is a deciduous evergreen that is native to East Asia, India and Australia and has become established in the warmest parts of the United States and other areas throughout the world. Called the Crape Myrtle (or Crepe Myrtle) in the United States, it is a highly decorative tree and is becoming widely prevalent in home and municipal landscape designs with its sinewy, fluted and patchy-looking stems, shrubby leaves and beautiful flowers of six or seven, crinkly-edged petals on stalks of white, pinkish red, purple or lavender. The flowers are followed by a capsule-like fruit that produces seeds, which provide food for many butterfly larvae, and the leaves are used as a food and, more importantly, in herbal medicines. The botanical genus, Lagerstroemia, is named after Swedish merchant, Magnus von Lagerström, who supplied Carolus (Carl) Linnaeus with the plants he collected for his work in identifying different species. We have Linnaeus to thank for the binomial system we use today, giving each plant two Latin words to identify both genus and species. Banaba is the Tagalog name for Lagerstroemia speciosa in the Philippine language, and it has been used for many years in that country (and elsewhere) as a folk remedy for controlling blood sugar. Several of the active constituents included in Banaba Leaf are corosolic acid and tannins, including lagerstroemin. Beneficial Uses: Banaba has been used in herbal medicine mainly for blood sugar control. One of its active constituents, corosolic acid, is suggested to possess insulin-like activity, stimulating glucose uptake. Recent research claims that this component was observed to be an activator of glucose transport into cells, which ultimately results in a lowering (less)Herbal Extracts Plus | $658 Kalyx.com |

The citric acid in the orange juice will help to mask any unpleasant powder tastes. Other common names: Buckeye, Common Horse Chestnut, Bark Bongay, Konker Tree, Spanish Chestnut Horse Chestnut is used to improve the circulatory system. It strengthens capillary walls and dilates blood vessels, which helps to relieve varicose veins, phlebitis, swollen ankles and local edema. The herb is said to reduce blood clots and hardening of the arteries, and may thus help to prevent strokes and heart attacks. Horse Chestnut also helps to loosen and expel lung congestion, which alleviates bronchitis, respiratory catarrh and coughs. History: The Horse Chestnut is a large deciduous tree that is native to southeastern Europe (notably the Balkan countries) and cultivated in temperate Europe and North America (in 1763, the first Horse Chestnut tree was blooming in a Pennsylvania garden). The sturdy Horse Chestnut is a close relative of the buckeye tree (Ohio Buckeye [Aesculus glabra] or the California Buckeye [Aesculus glabra californica], etc.), which is a native of North America, but quite different in application. The Horse Chestnut tree is highly ornamental and bears palm-shaped, serrate leaves, chandelier-like white flowers with a pink-to-yellow spot, followed by globose, spiny, green-brown fruits filled with several shiny, red-brown seeds. This exotic tree, frequently considered a sign of prosperity, may reach a height of eighty to one hundred feet and can be found in parks, gardens and streets, thriving in fertile, well-drained soil in sun or partial shade. According to Renaissance herbal writings, the Turks used the Horse Chestnuts to treat respiratory ailments in horses; hence, we have its English name, as well as its botanical specific, hippocastanum (hippo is the Greek word for horse). Native Americans of the Northeast used Horse Chestnut as a remedy for cold symptoms and ''carried'' the nuts to ward off rheumatism. It is interesting to note that in European folk medicine, it was also carried in the pocket for preventing and curing arthritis. Horse Chestnut was also used to relieve hemorrhoids. Other common names: Soursop, Guanábana, Guanavana, Guanaba, Corossol Epineux, Huanaba, Toge-banreisi, Durian Benggala, Nangka Blanda, Brazilian Paw-Paw Graviola has a long history in the Amazon and West Indian tropics as a remedy for many ailments and particularly as an effective vermifuge, expelling internal worms and parasites. It has also been used to relieve depression and nervous disorders, as well as acting as an astringent to ease diarrhea. History: Graviola is an upright evergreen that is native to the Amazon jungle and some of the Caribbean islands and bears large, glossy, dark-green leaves, reaching a height of about twenty feet. The tree also produces a large, heart-shaped, yellow-green fruit with white flesh inside, that is both edible and delicious and sold in various local markets, where it is consumed by indigenous peoples. In 1526, the ''soursop'' (one of its common names) was described as being abundant in the West Indies and in northern South America. It is today found in Florida, Bermuda and the Bahamas (both wild and cultivated), from sea level to an altitude of 3,500 feet throughout the West Indies, and from southern Mexico to Peru and Argentina. The plant was one of the first fruit trees carried from America to the Old World Tropics, where it has become widely distributed from southeastern China to Australia and the warm lowlands of eastern and western Africa. Graviola is common in the markets of Malaya and Southeast Asia. Very large, symmetrical fruits have also been seen on sale in South Vietnam. It also became well established at an early date in the Pacific Islands, and the tree has been raised successfully, but has never fruited, in Israel. The slightly sour-tasting fruit pulp is also often made into drinks and sherbets. In Spanish-speaking countries, it is called Guanábana and Graviola in Portuguese-speaking Brazil, and it is also sometimes called paw-paw. Other common names: Blue Gum, Eucalyptus, Fever Tree, Gum Tree, Australian Fever Tree, Tasmanian Blue Gum, Malee, Stringy Bark Tree Eucalyptus Leaf is legendary for its ability to clear respiratory and nasal passages of congestion and mucus, thus relieving colds, sinusitis, influenza, croup, emphysema, chronic and acute bronchitis, asthma and dry coughs. It is also a superior antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and antiseptic that improves skin problems and combats staph and strep infection, as well as an anti-inflammatory that relieves muscular pain and soothes painful arthritic joints. History: The Eucalyptus tree is sometimes called the ''Gum Tree,'' and there are over seven hundred species of gum trees, all of which are rich in essential oils, and most of them are native to Australia. There are a small number of gum trees that are found in New Guinea and Indonesia; but because of Australia 's particular climatic conditions, no other continent is so characterized by a single genus of tree as the ''Eucalypts,'' and they can be found in almost every part of the continent. Eucalyptus trees have now been introduced to parts of the Americas, Africa, India and southern Europe; and Eucalyptus globulus is considered the best-known variety for medicinal purposes. It is a fast-growing tree that may reach well over three hundred feet in height (another species, E. amygdalin, may reach almost five hundred feet!). Because it sends out a vast network of roots, the tree has been known to drain marshy areas, even eliminating malarial swamps and fever districts in certain hot, humid countries, thus earning the common name, Fever Tree. The Eucalyptus tree is a fairly hardy evergreen with a gray trunk, sword-shaped, blue-green leaves (which emit a pungent aroma when crushed) and stalkless flowers, thriving in fertile, well-drained, neutral-to-acid soil in sun at an average of sixty degrees Fahrenheit. The flowers in bud are covered with a membrane, giving the tree the name of its botanical genus, Eucalyptus, which is derived from eucalyptos, the Greek word for (less)Herbal Extracts Plus | $517 Kalyx.com |

The citric acid in the orange juice will help to mask any unpleasant powder tastes. Other common names: Citrus Limonum, Citronnier, Leemoo, Limone It's not just a garnish for your lemonade. Try our Lemon Peel for natural good health. Its high nutritive content (especially ascorbic acid) helps to build the body's immune system and ward off infection, and its digestive qualities help to ease indigestion, colic and nausea. Lemon Peel may also halt vomiting. History: Lemon Peel is the ripened rind of Lemons, which grow on tender trees that thrive in rich, well-drained soil in full sun with ample moisture during the growing season. Lemons are native to northern India, and are also cultivated in the West Indies, the Mediterranean region and other tropical countries throughout the world, but do not transplant well. The trees may grow to a height of twenty-two feet with green leaves and flowers that produce yellow fruits that are very sour. The name Lemon is derived from the Arabic, limun or limu, which, in turn, comes from the Sanskrit, nimbuka, a term that covers several types of citrus. The trees reached Europe by way of Persia (or Media) and were first grown in Greece, and then Italy in the second century. There is a great deal of current research being conducted lately with respect to Lemon Peel and its powerful constituent, d-limonene, a cyclic monoterpene (also found in orange peel) that causes G1 cell cycle arrest, but thus far, no conclusions have been drawn, and further research is needed. In vitro and animal data suggest potential efficacy of D-limonene in treating cancer, but human data are lacking. Further research is necessary to determine if D-limonene has a role in the prevention or treatment of cancer. Lemon has been an important ingredient in herbal medicines, as well as candies, baked goods, drinks and preserves, with the peels used in aromatherapy and potpourris for their strong fragrance. Some of the constituents in Lemon Peel include volatile oils, flavonoids, coumarins, hesperidin (a bitter, crystalline glucoside), a high content of ascorbic acid (vitamin C), protein, carbohydrates, fiber, calcium, potassium, (less)Herbal Extracts Plus | $444 Kalyx.com |
