| | MTV's relentless self-promotional machine rolls on with this 95-minute compilation of performances from the channel's annual Video Music Awards show (described here as "the only award show that matters"--easy for them to say, since they invented it), ranging from 1990 to 2002. Image is paramount to this operation, especially if there's a little titillation involved; thus we have the sex-kitten antics of Britney Spears and Shakira, the spectacle of a bare-chested Nelly wearing his jeans not only below his boxers but barely above his knees, and the sheer absurdity of MC Hammer's costumed cast of thousands crowding the stage for "You Can't Touch This." But there's also some good music here (Nelly's electrifying "Country Grammar," the Brian Setzer Orchestra's swinging "Jump, Jive & Wail," Bone Thugs-N-Harmony's entertainingly over-the-top "Crossroads"), as well as short features on "turntablism" and pop songwriting. Of course, some may argue that the likes of Jewel (who plays solo) and ... (less)Artist: U2, Britney Spears | $25 - $80 3 Merchants |
| | After 25 chart-topping hits, the singing star becomes a movie star! George Strait makes his film debut in an entertaining look into the heart and soul of country music from Young Guns director Christopher Cain. Superstar Dusty Chandler (Strait) is tired of the smoke, the strobe lights and the overmiked sound of his arena spectaculars. One night, something snaps. "I'm just going to take a little walk," Dusty says as he walks out of the empty hall, ditching his beard, ponytail - and temporarily, his career - to reclaim his down-home country roots. But his manager (Leslie Ann Warren) retaliates: a stand-in (Kyle Chandler) lip-synchs his songs in concert. And a romance with a lovely rancher (Isabel Glasser) is on again, off again like a rodeo cowboy. The simple life can be complex, but it's nothing a revitalized country boy can't handle! | | The hits come fast and furious in this 2001 performance by Antoine "Fats" Domino at the Jazz and Heritage Festival in his hometown of New Orleans. Well, maybe not that fast; Fats's style was never what you'd call exactly frenetic, and he was well into his seventies at the time of this show. But there are a whole lot of hits--"I'm Walkin'," "Blueberry Hill," "Walking to New Orleans," "My Blue Heaven," etc.--and they're just as irresistible as ever, with Domino and band (including a full horn section) in top form as they deliver their brew of R&B, rock & roll, and country music with its distinctively rollicking New Orleans vibe. Aside from the 60-minute concert, the DVD features interviews with Fats, Allen Toussaint (himself a legendary New Orleans musician and producer), author/music journalist Mikal Gilmore, and others, plus a minute or two of Domino and Toussaint jamming at the piano. --Sam Graham (less)Artist: Fats Domino | $8 - $19 13 Merchants |
