| | We've come to expect a few things from composer Angelo Badalamenti's numerous collaborations with David Lynch. His scores for Twin Peaks , Wild at Heart , and Blue Velvet all took a smoky jazz- noir aesthetic into the orchestra pit. The results were memorable--and sometimes haunting--just like the films. For The Straight Story --the G-rated (yes, that's right) tale of an elderly man's epic journey on a John Deere lawnmower to see his sick brother--we get a different side to both the composer and the director once again. Here the orchestrations are atmospheric, but a subtle strain of folk music is evident throughout. "Rose's Theme" is filled with acoustic guitar finger-picking against a string section, "Alvin's Theme" has a fiddle mimicking a locomotive, and "Country Waltz" is just that. "Farmland Tour" is the Twin Peaks theme gone sentimental. A hint of nostalgia, a certain Midwestern innocence, and plenty of vast-sounding passages make this the perfect sonic backdrop for a film set... | | As the liner notes remark, there's a terrific "sense of love and inspiration" in this utterly ripping collection of all-star renditions of Elvis standards. Cuts from Dwight Yoakam, Travis Tritt, Amy Grant, a fired-up Billy Joel, and a killer "Burning Love" from country outlaw Travis Tritt are highlights. -- Jeff Bateman (less)Artist: Various Artists | $1 - $16 3 Merchants |
| | The remarkable soundtrack to the powerful motion picture "North Country," "the story of a woman who stood up for what she believed in, even if it meant standing up alone," includes 12 moving tracks from artists including Bob Dylan, Gustavo Santaolalla, Warren Zevon, Leo Kottke, Kim Carnes, The Bellamy Brothers, Mac Davis, and Cat Power. "North Country - Music From The Motion Picture" also features Tell Ol' Bill, a new track from Bob Dylan only found on this incredible collection of songs. | | In his tale of two cowboys whose lives twist and fray, director Stephen Frears casts a nostalgic eye on the postwar West but falls short of reinventing Hollywood's most circumscribed genre, the Western. Although The Hi-Lo Country is set in northern New Mexico, its soundtrack sounds decidedly Lone Star. With famous Texans like Willie Nelson and the matchless yodeler Don Walser crooning some dusty charmers and a couple of country standards like "San Antonio Rose" and "Why Don't You Love Me" thrown in for good measure, the overall mood is very barbecue-friendly. Only Beck, who duets with Nelson on "Drivin' Nails in My Coffin" sounds a bit out of place here, his nasal drawl in curious contrast to Nelson's unmistakable whinny. Carter Burwell's score is standard-issue "epic" in its long gazes that suggest the largeness of both the West and the men's souls who inhabit it, but it gains an edge with its austere cadences and Mexican trumpet and guitar flourishes. --Lois Maffeo (less)Artist: Various Artists | $9 - $19 6 Merchants |

| | Desert Blue has all the makings of a hipster's delight. The indie-damaged, but heartfelt, bedroom musings of singer-songwriters Ben Lee and Cat Power juxtapose nicely with the nascent feminism of vintage tunes by Nancy Sinatra and Janis Ian. And the album's standout track, a duet between Nina Persson (the Cardigans) and Nathan Larson (Shudder to Think) is a country-laced acoustic ballad of real resonance. But soon enough, the hipness turns hapless as Desert Blue gets mired in the open-mic-nite-at-the-coffeehouse amateurism of newcomers Rilo Kiley and Bic Runga. Collectively, the songs here don't convey any sense of tone or place that a capable soundtrack should. Instead, they just leave you feeling lucky you aren't as mopey and self-obsessed as the film's music supervisor must be. --Matt Hanks (less)Razor & Tie | $25 amazon.com |
