| | "The Japanese version features two additional tracks. CD contains 2 bonus tracks. Between 2003's hugely successful ELEPHANT and 2005's GET BEHIND ME SATAN, White Stripes frontman Jack White produced Loretta Lynn's Grammy-winning VAN LEAR ROSE and contributed a handful of tracks to the bluegrass-heavy COLD MOUNTAIN soundtrack. While GET BEHIND ME SATAN certainly isn't a country album, it does highlight White's fascinatingly unpredictable nature. With the exception of a few songs (including the blistering single ""Blue Orchid""), Jack leaves his electric six-string in the garage, opting to roam around with his acoustic guitar (as on the gentle ""As Ugly As I Seem"") or settle into a marimba- or piano-led melody. As always, Meg White is on hand with her wonderfully unpolished, cymbal-heavy drumming, providing the perfect foil for Jack's intense, mercurial presence. With its quirky narratives about ghosts, nurses, and Rita Hayworth, SATAN is a restless record, and the duo uses that energy to maximum effect, easily making this the White Stripes' most dynamic album to date.Spin (p.63) - Ranked #18 in Spin's ""40 Best Albums Of 2005"" - ""[The disc] feels less like a middle finger than an attempt to insulate the group from the bruising limelight."" Spin (p.101) - ""[Jack White] manages to make songs that sound like harnessed truths, which is why the White Stripes generally make the best records in the contemporary world."" - Grade: B Uncut (p.88) - 4 stars out of 5 - ""White stays true to the band's aesthetic vision, while mapping multiple paths away from stagnation..."" CMJ (No. 916, p.4) - ""Seems Jack and Meg have been spending time in the nursery fiddling with their old xylophones and marimbas in between their routine bloozeouts, power-pop aerobics and local band beat-downs."" | | "Producers: Richard Bennett, Emory Gordy, Jr., Steve Earle, Tony Brown. Includes liner notes by Karen Schoemer. During the early period of Earle's career, as chronicled here, he took the staid '80s Nashville music world by storm, kicking up an iconoclastic, rock-influenced storm the likes of which hadn't been seen since Waylon Jennings' early outlaw period 15 years prior. Like Waylon, Earle toted a larger-than-life sound, badass attitude, and gritty country-rock sound with him into the studio. Fortunately, he also possessed a craftsman's gift for songwriting. This disc concentrates mostly on Earle's groundbreaking debut, GUITAR TOWN, and rightly so. That album's title tune, as well as the snarling ""Devil's Right Hand"" and ""Good Ol' Boy (Gettin' Tough)"" combine a knack for sharply turned wordplay with a real insight into the depths of the American underbelly. One of Earle's primary influences was Townes Van Zandt, a fact made plain by the narrative skills Earle displays on ""Copperhead Road."" To prove that Earle can sing a truck-driving song with the best of them, a rocking version of Dave Dudley's classic ""Six Days on the Road,"" originally used for a movie soundtrack, is also included. ESSENTIAL STEVE EARLE makes a fine starter kit, but once you try it, you'll want to continue on to further appreciate the riches in Earle's oeuvre.Entertainment Weekly (3/5/93, p.59) - ""...This compilation shows Earle moving from rockabilly to rock and captures the hostility and disillusionment of the nation's itinerant underbelly..."" - Rating: A+" (less)MCA Records (USA) | $10 - $19 3 Merchants |
| | "While 1990's THE BYRDS box set was an excellent representation of the group's illustrious and highly influential career, the 2006 four-CD set, THERE IS A SEASON, is a wonderful replacement. Working chronologically from pre-Byrds bands the Beefeaters and the Jet Set through their groundbreaking folk-rock and country-rock incarnations and culminating with the absolutely smokin' Clarence White era and the mid-'70s reunion line-ups, the collection makes a strong case for the Byrds being perhaps the single most important American rock band. While Roger McGuinn was always the leader of the band (and its one constant member) it's startling to consider the number of musical giants that passed through the band, including David Crosby, Chris Hillman, Gene Clark, Gram Parsons, and the aforementioned White. The group's originals--from ""I""ll Feel A Whole Better"" to ""Eight Miles High"" to ""Drug Store Truck Drivin' Man""--cast the Byrds as a brilliant songwriters collective; however, their ability to boldly interpret the work of others (ultimately making it their own) helped bridge the gaps between country, folk, rock & roll, and the Love Generation. The talent, legacy, and sheer beauty of the Byrds music can not be underestimated, and THERE IS A SEASON ensures that won't happen.Rolling Stone (p.79) - 5 stars out of 5 -- ""They came up with harmonizing folk rock that sounds like liquid sunshine...[and] they pioneered trippy psychedelic guitar rock..."" | | "Original score composed by John Powell. I AM SAM was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Compilation Album For A Motion Picture Or Television.. Japanese import edition includes a bonus track (""If I Needed Someone""). In the film I AM SAM, Sean Penn's title character is a mentally challenged, Beatles-obsessed character who lands in the middle of a custody case for his daughter. With Sam looking to the Fab Four's music for guidance, the accompanying soundtrack is wall-to-wall Lennon-McCartney. Rebuffed for the rights to the original songs, the album's organizers instead recruited an all-star array of talent to contribute Beatles covers within a three-week span. The quick turn-around time meant delightfully original interpretations of these stellar songs as opposed to by-the-numbers readings. Among the many highlights are Ben Harper's psychedelic ""Strawberry Fields Forever,"" a chiming Aimee Mann/Michael Penn duet on ""Two Of Us"" and Chocolate Genius' ethereal ""Julia."" Elsewhere, Eddie Vedder delivers an acoustic-driven ""You've Got To Hide Your Love Away"" through gritted teeth, Sheryl Crow adds a nice country twang to ""Mother Nature's Son,"" and Stereophonics' raspy take on ""Don't Let Me Down"" sounds like a Faces outtake. Although The Black Crowes offer up a stark arrangement of ""Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds,"" Grandaddy's chugging alt-rock version of ""Revolution"" and Nick Cave's melancholy crooning of ""Let It Be"" make I AM SAM worth the price of admission.Entertainment Weekly (12/14/01, p.84) - ""...These songs are like old friends...and you don't have to see the movie to enjoy it..."" - Rating: B Q (4/02, p.125) - 3 out of 5 stars - ""...The right stuff..."""
