| | While his fellow ex-bandmates busied themselves with various high-profile projects (John Lennon with Imagine and a series of high-profile media events; George Harrison with All Things Must Pass and The Concert for Bangla Desh ), Paul McCartney climbed into a van with his wife and a few journeyman players and gigged at university student unions for what amounted to spare change. Of course, by 1976 they were one of the biggest draws in rock, having the last laugh--if not necessarily the final word. Gathering the cream of their recorded output on a generous double-disc sampler-cum-TV-special-soundtrack seemed a promising effort at historical revisionism, but Wingspan itself is a distinct misnomer: fully 17 of the 40 tracks here hail from various pre- and post-Wings McCartney solo albums. Completely overlooked are unheralded B-sides such as "Oh Woman, Oh Why," "Little Woman Love," "Country Dreamer," "The Mess," "Walking in the Park with Eloise," "Sally G," and "Girl's School"--some of M... | | As a veteran of Alison Krauss & Union Station and the Lonesome River Band (not to mention countless country and bluegrass recording sessions), Dan Tyminski had certainly paid his dues before his spot on the O Brother soundtrack brought him worldwide acclaim. The erstwhile Soggy Bottom Boy frontman issued his solo debut a few months before the soundtrack hit, and it features a wide and impressive range of current and former bandmates (including Krauss on a pair of tracks) plus several other A-list instrumentalists. The result is a deftly executed survey of the bluegrass table circa 2000, a menu that includes melodic pop, rousing gospel, hard-driving instrumentals, new compositions in a traditional style, and revived old favorites. --Marc Greilsamer (less)Artist: Dan Tyminski | $11 - $19 9 Merchants |
| | Saxophonist Sam Levine combines two popular music forms to create something new and fresh. The result of taking today's most popular Praise and Worship songs and presenting them in a "smooth jazz" musical setting is an uplifting instrumental collection and the perfect soundtrack for life's daily grind. Nashville studio musicians know Sam Levine as one of the busiest woodwind players in town. In one day he might play saxophone for a country artist, flute or penny whistle for a gospel artist and clarinet in a traditional jazz band. His playing has given color and expression to a wide variety of artists' tracks, including Amy Grant, the Neville Brothers, Vince Gill and Michael McDonald. He is known for his reliable ensemble skills and his melodic, expressive solos. Sam has more than 10 artist CDs in the smooth jazz and contemporary Christian genres. He has been nominated three times for a Dove Award and played on at least two Grammy Award winning recordings. (less)Artist: Sam Levine | $8 - $20 8 Merchants |

| | The soundtrack to Felicity 's fictional final college year, Senior Year is tinged with many of the same emotions found in real senior years--sadness, love, and a desire to hold on to the present for just a little while more. A talented and diverse crop of singer-songwriters communicates these nuanced feelings through inoffensive, stripped-down rock tracks. Alt-country's Ryan Adams offers a subdued piano-and-acoustic ode to being torn between lovers, chanteuse Chantal Kreviazuk warbles strongly about longing, and country singer Shelby Lynne seduces with a steamy soul number. Other highlights include Andy Stochansky, sounding like Belle and Sebastian fronting Travis; Jude's warm tenor and guitar tones conjuring the best power pop of the 1970s; and Sixpence None the Richer's new track, a beautiful string-laden delicacy. Despite how easy it would be for the sticky topics of desire and love to become sappy, Senior Year largely avoids such pitfalls. Better still, the album rarely sounds b...
