 | A famous writer is asked to play the drums in a group composed of handicapped musicians in the decidedly unbelgian debut feature Ex Drummer. From the opening sequence that is played in reverse and integrates the credits into the film's production design, it is clear that director Koen Mortier wants to do things differently. Though based on the eponymous novel from Herman Brusselmans (a controversial writer of the love-him-or-hate variety) Mortier has nevertheless crafted his own universe, which is neither extremely exaggerated nor exactly of this world and filled with great rock music, sharp performances and pitch-black humour. Because of the continuous barrage of swear words, bloody violence and explicit sex, distribution beyond its home country will be difficult, though festivals and perhaps an adventurous distributor might bite.
