| | Ray broke barriers. In the '50s he invented soul by mixing the sacred and profane of black music: R & B and gospel. In 1962 he went completely crazy, interpreting classic country. It was one of his finest moments. From the start the record is an oddity. A big band pumps, female background singers rip through a chorus of "Bye Bye Love," and Ray brings high energy to the Everly Bros. teeny-bop lyrics. Some songs suffer from syrupy choir and string arrangements, but Ray is always there to set things straight. He gives country some funk, and erases, for a day, all questions of black and white. --Steve Tignor (less)Artist: Ray Charles | $8 - $22 4 Merchants |

| | This is the history of country music all on one disc, from Jimmie Rodgers and the Carter Family all the way through to Iris DeMent and Emmylou Harris, with stops along the way for names like Cash, Jones, Monroe and Haggard. Even if country isn't your thang, there's no excuse for not owning this; it's America in the twentieth century, presented for your edification. Besides the names already mentioned, you've got Kitty Wells doing "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky-Tonk Angels" and Doc Watson doing "Blue Railroad Train." Nothing less than brilliant, as a non-country singer once whined. --Chris Nickson (less)Artist: Various Artists | $16 - $21 5 Merchants |

| | Truck-drivin' songs hold a narrow but proud niche in the mythology of country & western music. Red Simpson, a Bakersfield songwriting compadre of Buck Owens and Merle Haggard, came into the game late, following the success of Dave Dudley and Del Reeves, and scored but one bona fide hit, 1971's dryly comic "I'm a Truck." But Simpson's work has held up better than most, thanks to his blue-collar voice and those twangin' Bakersfield Telecasters. This 20-track collection is taken from Simpson's mid-'60s and early '70s Capitol albums. Besides "I'm a Truck," highlights include the original version of "Highway Patrol" (memorably covered by Junior Brown on 1993's Guit with It ) and a chugging version of "Diesel Smoke, Dangerous Curves." --Rick Mitchell (less)Razor & Tie | $62 amazon.com |

| | At the heart of this collection are modern, high fidelity recordings of DeFord Bailey doing what he was most famous for, playing the harmonica. But other selections reveal sides of DeFord's music not widely recognized: his abilities as a guitar player, singer and banjo player. He often performed his Kansas City Blues on the Opry, singing it enough that veteran opry members from the 1930s still talked about DeFord and his bulldog. His son recalled that his father becam serious about playing the guitar when he was on tour with the Opry group: he was often assigned to guard the pile of instruments that accompanied them, and while he did that began to try his hand at some of the guitars.
