| | Based on the hit comic book about a man who returns from the dead to avenge his killers, the film adaptation of The Crow suffered a cruel irony when star Brandon Lee (son of martial arts superstar Bruce Lee) died during production after a bizarre onset accident. That event only deepened the film's aura of death and gothic unease, moods that are brilliantly underscored by this well-chosen collection of stark alt rock, dark metal, and industrial dirges. The opener, the Cure's typically angst-ridden "Burn," is about as sentimental as this album gets, bookended by Jane Siberry's wistful "It Can't Rain All the Time." Sandwiched in between is a virtual primer on powerful mid-1990s alt and industrial rock, from Nine Inch Nails hammering Joy Division's "Dead Souls" into its own image to the blistering snarl of Helmet, Pantera, and the Rollins Band. So-called pop-song scores often have a cheap afterthought feel to them; this one, a refreshingly integral part of the film itself, stands as a... | | "On his solo albums, David J (of Bauhaus and Love and Rockets fame) gets back to his art school roots. His haunting sound collages make use of film noir jazz, snippets of Rubber Soul acoustic pop, the disorienting synth textures of early Pink Floyd and, of course, chiaroscuro Goth shadings. These paintings in sound provide an elaborate backdrop for J's surrealistic spoken word musings." - ROLLING STONE "Warm & meandering, each track stamping its own identity on the mind, the music's structure is pared down to basics ... David J has secured an individual, if confusing talent." - MELODY MAKER "Not actually a David J solo album but a fascinating collaborative effort ... the prose for the entire piece comes from past collaborator and longtime Bauhaus/David J supporter and friend Alan Moore. Known predominantly for his inventive, striking comic book work in such classics of the form as V for Vendetta and Watchmen, here he creates an extended, mysterious narrative, half rum... | | Bifocal Media is very proud, and excited to publish this title from two legendary artists: Brian Walsby and The Melvins. MANCHILD 3 (Brian's 3rd published book of comic art) showcases the illustrative skill and wit that have earned Mr. Walsby a loyal following of fans since the early 80s. Many will remember Brian's work in magazines ranging from Maximum Rocknroll and Flipside all the way over to Hustler's Barely Legal while others know of Brian's classic album art for bands like 7-Seconds, Melvins, Scared Straight, and others. Brian also played drums for Polvo, Ryan Adams, Scared Straight, and currently plays for Double Negative. Manchild 3 comes packaged with the Melvins "Making Love" Demos CD. This is an ultra rare 8 song recording made my the band in 1987! Until now these tracks have never been released. The inclusion of this CD is fitting as MANCHILD 3 includes a 16 page illustrated Melvins tour diary from their 2006 tour. (less)Artist: Brian Walsby | $10 - $13 5 Merchants |
| | Dufus most inspiring work to date is a perfect mixture of their signature chaotic, childlike compositions (which critics have compared to the mastermind experimentations of Captain Beefheart, Zappa, Ween and Mr. Bungle) and passionate, crescendoing melodies that leave you gasping for breath with every twangy note. In Monstrous Attitude, their third album with ROIR, is mixed by Shimmy Disc's revered Kramer and comes in a colossal 12 panel Digipak with comic book art by anti-folk hero, Jeffrey Lewis. It lives up to its name; it's a monstrous work that cannot be ignored. (less)Artist: Dufus | $8 - $18 6 Merchants |
