| | Taking the evolution of the comic book as its subject, this History Channel documentary stands out by merit of its comprehensive scope and insight. Beginning with the early days of 1930s vigilantes and the patriotic characters of the 1940s, the program reveals the current complexity and range found in the pages of contemporary graphic novels, and explores the ways that cultural climates and popular attitudes are reflected in comic books. All the heavyweights weigh in, including Neil Gaiman (THE SANDMAN), Frank Miller (THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS), Stan Lee (SPIDER-MAN, THE SILVER SURFER), Kevin Smith (CHASING AMY), Will Eisner (THE SPIRIT), and others. Keith David, who voiced Spawn from the TV show, narrates the program, which is presented by Peta Wilson (LA FEMME NIKITA). In addition to the star-studded cast, however, the documentary has a lot to offer fans and neophytes alike, with analyses of the role of collecting in the comic book world, and the creation of such seminal entities as DC Comics and Marvel as well as characters like Dark Horse, the Incredible Hulk, and Wonder Women. Contextualizing the innovations and progress of the art form, this documentary is not just an important exploration of the graphic arts, but a fascinating look back at the shifting cultural concerns of a nation. | | Warner Brothers' Batman: The Animated Series (1992-1995) remains a striking, stylized program that helped to revitalize the familiar comic book hero. Drawing on such diverse influences as Frank Miller's graphic novel The Dark Knight Returns , the Fleischers' Superman cartoons of the early '40s, and contemporary Japanese animation, the filmmakers stress interesting designs and cinematography. The Caped Crusader prowls a sinister, Art Deco-styled world of tall verticals, sharp angles, silhouettes, searchlights, and grid-like shadows cast by window frames. Its visual pizzazz eclipses Filmation's pallid kidvid, The Batman/Superman Hour (CBS, 1968), which ran off and on in various incarnations through 1981. Many of the same artists worked on the Batman animated features (e.g., Mask of the Phantasm (1993), Batman Beyond--The Movie (1999)), which display similar strengths and weaknesses. Ironically, Batman: The Animated Series looks better in stills than it does in motion. The artists ... (less) Director: Bruce Timm ♦ Actors: Batman the Animated Series | $20 - $47 18 Merchants |

| | The Battle of Little Big Horn, known as ''Custer's Last Stand,'' has been one of the most frequently depicted moments in American history—and one of the least understood, still shrouded in myth. The battle has inspired over 1,000 different paintings and works of art, calendar displays, comic books and cereal boxes. The golden-haired general and his doomed 7th Cavalry have been wiped out by Indians in more than 40 films. Yet the battle that left no white survivors also left two very different accounts of Little Big Horn: one white; one Native. Using journals, oral accounts and Indian ledger drawings as well as archival and feature films, a Native American novelist, James Welch (Winter in the Blood, The Indian Lawyer) and a white filmmaker, Paul Stekler (Eyes on the Prize) combine talents to examine this watershed moment from two views: from that of the Lakota Sioux, Cheyenne and Crow who lived on the Great Plains for generations; and from that of the white settlers who pushed west...
