| | This 1997 album debuted at the top of the pop, country, and Christian album charts. Sadly, it underscored the artistic vacuum surrounding Rimes in the wake of her explosive 1996 hit single "Blue." At a time when female country singers were being lauded for their growing depth and sophistication, this collection of "inspirational songs" seemed anachronistic and downright corny. The concept was more appropriate to a TV-marketed album by some faded legend than a singer so young. Even the best singers would have difficulty bringing anything new to the over-recorded title song, "Bridge Over Troubled Waters," "God Bless America," "Amazing Grace," and "The Star Spangled Banner," songs impossible to redefine. That might explain why Rimes's vocals throughout are as soulless and detached as her performance of "Blue" was passionate and earthy. At times, she sounds as if she's singing from a teleprompter. The album's success is undeniable. Whether it did her talent justice is another matter. --... (less)Artist: LeAnn Rimes | $4 - $10 9 Merchants |
| | International superstar, Cliff Richard, returns to America and Contemporary Christian Music with Healing Love Songs of Inspiration. Cliff's first CCM project in 23 years gathers together some of the world's most inspiring tunes and offers Cliff's versions of them for the first time in the United States. Cliff's original material is showcased on the top 20 UK title track, "Healing Love" and the #1 "Saviour's Day." "The Millennium Prayer," which also hit #1, deftly weaves heartfelt lyrics around a musical telling of "The Lord's Prayer." He also interprets some American classics, like the evergreen "Butterfly Kisses," which hit #1 for its writer Bob Carlisle across several secular and mainstream radio formats. Cliff eloquently covers Bette Midler's "From a Distance" and gives a stirring performance on the "Rainbow/Wonderful World" medley. He even recalls his roots when he delivers his brand of rock n' roll on Larry Norman's ground-breaker "Why Should the Devil Have All the Good Mu... | | Metroland is what locals call the suburbs surrounding London's Metro rail system. It's also novelist Julian Barnes's metaphor for middle-class complacency, the refuge the film's Christian Bale somehow finds himself in by the late '70s after a hedonistic '60s Parisian interlude spent rebelling against traditional mores. Those are also the geographic and chronological poles Mark Knopfler's score orbits, from wistful title music that edges perilously close to Kenny G-Land to playfully cheesy, tongue-in-cheek cocktail jazz and riff-rock. Along the way Knopfler also pays homage to gypsy jazz-guitar great Django Reinhardt (who's also gratifyingly represented here by two vintage cuts, "Blues Clair" and "Minor Swing") as well as serving up the quiet, melodic melancholy familiar to admirers of Local Hero and Cal . The balance of the collection is devoted to a motley collection of period-pop (The Stranglers' droll "Peaches," Hot Chocolate's "So You Win Again," Elvis Costello's breakthrough "A... | | This two-disc set bears a most unfortunate title, considering its disappointing delivery. While Songs 4 Life contains contributions from some of today's best-loved, Dove Award-winning contemporary Christian artists--including Jaci Velasquez, Jars of Clay, DC Talk, Amy Grant, and Steven Curtis Chapman--the sequence and selections pale in comparison to the best material this genre has to offer. Little is outright awful, but even less reaches beyond mildly nice or overdone and stale. It's too bad there isn't greater diversity--there is no traditional gospel and other than Audio Adrenaline's "Man of God," the collection lacks any truly alternative coverage. Songs 4 Life , bland and safe, is a far cry from a mountaintop experience. --Paige La Grone (less)Artist: Various Artists | $11 - $21 7 Merchants |
