 | 2009 release. The Carter Family recorded hundreds of songs throughout their career and It would be almost impossible to find a Folk singer or a Folk group nowadays whose repertoire does not show the influence of the Carter Family. In terms of hits, well where do we start? Included the million selling 'Wildwood Flower' from 1928, along with 'I'm Thinking Tonight Of My Blue Eyes' and 'My Clinch Mountain Home' which were among 1929s top five best sellers. Here then is a virtual catalogue of Country songs expressing the thoughts, problems, and beliefs of American country folk and sung by people for whom these feelings are personal ones. These recordings of this memorable group speak more eloquently than the thousands of words which have been written about the Carter Family to explain the mystery of why this trio has received such far-reaching acclaim and such sincere veneration from folklorists, city, and country folk alike for more than 85 years. 27 tracks. | ![Classical Piano Favorites For Christmas [CD on Demand]](http://img.shopbig.com/120/687474703a2f2f6563782e696d616765732d616d617a6f6e2e636f6d2f696d616765732f492f35316a31316e52326b784c2e5f534c3136305f2e6a7067.jpg) | As has been related elsewhere in the Rothmar catalogue, The Pennrose Orchestra took its name from the small theater where they first gathered to rehearse. What started out as a few piano players all jamming and exchanging musical ideas eventually turned into a full fledged orchestra. It was the place to go for the classically trained session musicians of Philadelphia. After a few abortive attempts at recording, the decision was made to sign with RothmarMedia, the only record company that could really give them the support they needed to get to the next level. This album is a return to their roots. The orchestra started off as a group of piano players, and this holiday season it returned to that structure. The classical pieces selected on this album are meant to evoke Christmas and all if its associative memories. Festooned in garlands, candelabras, trees and lights, the theater was the embodiment of the holiday season, and it speaks on the music contained herein. The perfect musical... | | Hands up all who remember Ace's Impact logo. It was back in the pre-CD era that they launched Impact with the album 'Stop, Look & Listen', an all-female 16-tracker drawn from the catalogue of Laurie Records and its off-shoot Rust. 24 years having gone by since then, they figured a CD version of that much-discussed LP was long overdue. The revamped result is a must-have for girl group fans and Laurie collectors alike. Taking great care not to duplicate titles that are available elsewhere on Ace, the title song is one of a handful of inclusions by top girl group the Chiffons, queens of the doo-lang. Cult favorites the Del-Rons are represented with their debut single, while their lead singer Reparata offers up her solo contribution to the death disc genre. In-demand session singer Bernadette Carroll should have been a star. Hear her two tracks to understand why. (less)Artist: Various Artists | $11 - $21 5 Merchants |
| | 2008 digitally remastered and expanded edition of The Move's third album featuring seven bonus tracks, including previously unreleased and rare material. Looking On features the Roy Wood-penned Hard Rock singles 'Brontosaurus' and 'When Alice Comes Back To The Farm'. Released in late 1970, the third Move album and the first to feature Jeff Lynne, found the band at the peak of their musical imagination. Often regarded as the "joker in the pack" in The Move's catalogue, with several heavy, Progressive Rock epics, Looking On can also be seen as the most relaxed and confident expression of the maverick Roy Wood re-energized by a partnership with new creative foil and similarly talented songwriter Lynne, formerly of Birmingham underground favorites The Idle Race. Together they reveled in the freedoms available to the late '60s pop musician, employing a wide array of instruments and production ideas. 14 tracks. Salvo. | | Guitarist Will Ackerman has often re-recorded his own songs, coming back years later with new interpretations and perhaps more refined techniques. Returning , however, consists entirely of new recordings of songs from the Ackerman archives. The founder of Windham Hill records, this is his first recording off the label since founding the company in 1976. He sold it in 1992, but has continued on it as an artist until now. Cynics might view this as a ploy to retain control of his catalogue, a common practice for artists who jump labels. Returning is thus a greatest hits CD, albeit of all new performances. The playing and recording are sharper here than on those old Windham Hill favorites and Ackerman's compositions have rarely sounded more poignant. "Unconditional" appears even more classical and ruminative than it's original, while the new version of "The Bricklayer's Beautiful Daughter" makes the 1977 version sound antique, like a dusty slack-stringed balalaika from the attic. | | HFQ's second recording is a darker follow up to the group's eponymous debut. This CD features original music, including the favorites "Dirty," "Hey Little Girl," "Molly's Pies" and an intense, exploratory rendition of the traditional "Oh Death." Clocking in at almost seventy minutes of music, the disc is a veritable catalogue of American roots styles, a starker predecessor to Dylan's latest "Love and Theft." Blues, Jazz, Country, Tango, Swing, Old-Time, Avante-Garde, Parlor Songs and Waltzes intermingle not from song to song but from moment to moment to create a rich, mysterious tapestry of sound. I LIKE YOU A LOT received four stars from THE ALL MUSIC GUIDE, charted at #3 on ROLLINGSTONE.COM's TOP TEN ALBUMS OF 2001 and was featured in a lengthy profile on Terry Gross' FRESH AIR on NPR. Recorded live in the studio to all-analog tape, I LIKE YOU A LOT was a sleeper hit and has found fans all over the globe. (less)Artist: Howard Fishman | $11 - $16 2 Merchants |
