 | The Cars' blend of New Wave experimentation and trad-rock values made for nearly ubiquitous radio presence in the late '70s and early '80s. Often jumpily ambivalent and marvelously pop-wise in the same moment, Ric Ocasek captured the zeitgeist for people to whom even Talking Heads didn't matter much. Kicking off with one of the all-time great singles, "Just What I Needed," then winding its way through seven more years of singles including the then-brand new "Tonight She Comes," Greatest Hits is one, um, well-oiled pleasure machine. --Rickey Wright (less)Artist: The Cars | $5 - $12 6 Merchants |
| | If you've never tuned in to Radio Disney, you're probably living with yaks someplace on a mountainside. The kids' radio station grownups love to dislike, even while allowing it to play in the car and house (and inside their minds), relies heavily on an extremely tight play list. It's not true that Britney Spears, the Backstreet Boys, and Christina Aguilera secretly own the station; it just seems that they do, given all the spins they get. Radio Disney Jams, Vol. 2 picks up where last hour's programming left off, with some modified lyrics from Lou Bega on "Disney Mambo No. 5," substituting the name of leading Disney cartoon characters for the women he fancies in his original mambo superhit. Of course, there's Weird Al Yankovic spoofing Star Wars and "American Pie" (not the Madonna version) with "The Saga Begins." Queen's "We Will Rock You" and "We Are the Champions" are two eminently familiar anthems, thanks in part to their crossing over into every imaginable sport from hockey to bowling. Will Smith, Stevie Wonder, and 98 Degrees are all here. And those disco diehards, the Village People and Sister Sledge, will remind older parents how long ago the '70s really were. New artists, including Steps, Jason Raize, and Aaron Carter also fill out this 18-track tribute to the power of Disney brandcasting. --Martin Keller (less)Artist: Disney | $5 - $10 4 Merchants |
| | You wouldn't expect the man behind Sling Blade to turn out a pedestrian album, but Billy Bob Thornton's country debut turns out to be surprising both for its risks and for its routine. To his credit, Thornton, with Marty Stuart producing, bypasses radio formula for a different kind of connection with his listener, veering from lengthy spoken verse to retro hillbilly deluxe. But does the listener want to hear what he has to say? In the opening song, "Dark and Mad," Thornton seems to telegraph the brooding danger of his most famous film role. Yet almost immediately he gets lost in ruminations so personal that he almost forgets there's an audience waiting to be involved. Past the kinky charm of "Forever," a bluesy, one-way telephone conversation in which he tells his main squeeze he's wearing the feathered pink panties she left in his car, there's a love song to his wife that's 180 degrees from passion, a revamped salute to John F. Kennedy, and a nine-and-a-half-minute piece of theatrical Southern gothic about witnessing a disturbing sexual encounter as a child. It's a weird trip, and totally unfocused, as if he just recorded whatever came into his head. But there's no denying Thornton's out-there charisma or the croaky appeal of his Arkansas twang. --Alanna Nash (less)Artist: Billy Bob Thornton | $10 - $23 3 Merchants |

| | Despite musical roots that branched from the Velvets to Steely Dan and the likes of then-new wave icons Roxy Music, the Cars never strayed far from the crucial, hook-conscious, three-minute pop song sensibility which made them one of the most successful and long-lived radio staples of the '70s and '80s. As well as being catchy, Ric Ocasek's best songs are also ironic--"Good Times Roll" and "Just What I Needed" both contain winking lyrical twists. With Ben Orr vocalizing the sweeter material, guitarist Elliott Easton's and keyboardist Greg Hawke's often-quirky musical embroidery, and drummer David Robinson's rhythmic propulsion and fashion sense, the Cars became the self-contained rock juggernaut--or, if you prefer, new wave arena band--documented on these two discs. The hit singles and select album cuts stretch from their improbably rich debut through moodier efforts like "Panorama" and the vibrant, yet satisfying "Shake It Up" and "Heartbeat City." The CD is well seasoned by a cache of previously unreleased demos, B-sides, and outtakes. The earliest of these ('77 demos of "Take Me Now" and "Cool Fool") demonstrate that the band's sound was intact before they met their first multiplatinum producer, while later rarities (playful covers of Iggy's "Fun Time" and the Nightcrawlers' "Little Black Egg") underscore their eclectic, seemingly incongruous tastes. --Jerry McCulley (less)Artist: The Cars | $25 - $33 2 Merchants |

| | Radio Lane represents an intersection of musical styles. Indeed, listening to the eclectic mix of genres, one gets the sense of riding in a car, listening to the radio and pushing the search button. First is an electronica-style dance tune, then a Celtic-tinged rock anthem, then a lilting folk tune, followed by an Al Green R&B-styled number, followed by a country song, etc. etc. The result is a pleasant listening experience that tickles the ear. But Radio Lane represents more than a showcase for the songwriting abililities and versatility of Dennis and MacDonald. According to the liner notes, "It is the intersection of hope on a difficult journey. Like the radio that picks up music on the airwaves, our hearts perceive God's invitation to the adventure." In the small world of women duos, Sharon Dennis of Culpeper, VA and Doris Au MacDonald, Fairfax, VA resident, have often been compared to a female Simon and Garfunkel. As The Braeded Chord, they masterfully weave strong imagery, gentle harmonies and evocative melodies to create a compelling listening experience. ".... I know writing. And I was astounded by the quality of the lyrics; by the careful, meticulous attention given to each word and phrase," says Steve Dennie, Communications Director for the United Brethren denomination, of their second CD, "Dream and Dare." "The songs themselves are soundly constructed, solidly played and the vocal performances sincere and touching," writes Steve Morley, music journalist, in a review of Dream and Dare for the official website of the United Methodist Church (www.umc.org). "In an age when pop music much of CCM included often clamors loudly for attention in a glutted marketplace, these two young women take the risk of quietly inviting you in for homemade soup and humbly hoping you ll accept." | | On their sophomore release, Silage turn their penchant for writing disposable novelty tunes (such as "My Car Makes Me Sin," "I Like the Radio," and their surf-punk cover of the Beach Boys' "Be True to Your School," all from their debut disc, Watusi ) into a knack for turning out clever, quirky pop songs with just the right amount of attitude. "Let's get lost in an original sound," reads the first line of the first song, "Original." And while we've heard this mix of hip-hop rhythms, distorted alternative-rock guitars, and the occasional surf melody before from groups like the Beastie Boys, Beck, Sublime, and 311, Silage know to keep their collective tongue firmly in cheek and refuse to take themselves too seriously while delivering serious entertainment bang for your buck. --Bradley S.
