He set up a state of the art digital studio and went to work on his first full length album. Previously Arlin had written individual tracks one at a time, so working on a full album of songs---intended to be listened to as one complete project---was a new adventure. The Secret Life of Boys took a year to write and produce. Arlin spent months working on some of the tracks and his efforts payed off with an amazing record containing a collection of songs and instrumentals that clearly belong together. This album led to Delphinium Blue signing with San Francisco label INgrooves. The project has consistently remained Delphinium Blue's top seller. The album features 12 tracks including the "The Secret Life of Boys" and the homoerotic single "Boy Seventeen". This product is manufactured on demand using CD-R recordable media. | | As the title implies, Dickens has a robust and roaring set of pipes that belie his size. And despite the novelty tag that follows him around (and that he in fact encouraged), his approach to music is dead serious even if his lyrics are often comical. This 22-song collection includes both his hits and his greatest performances. Top-quality musicians abound: Early 1949 cuts feature Ernest Tubb’s guitarist Billy Byrd and Roy Acuff’s Smoky Mountain Boys; his own talented Country Boys included at various points Grady Martin, Red Taylor, Tommy Jackson, Buddy Emmons, Harold Bradley, Cecil Brower, and Pig Robbins. His spirited vocals roll through traditional Acuff-influenced country, proto-rockabilly, Western swing, and earnest (if not overblown) ballads. Rather than polish up his hillbilly background, he flaunts it for all to notice. This pint-sized package packs a mean punch. --Marc Greilsamer (less)Artist: Little Jimmy Dickens | $12 - $19 7 Merchants |
| | People often ask, "Who are The Dix?" These charismatic young men hail from soulful Compton, New York, home of the infamous "Booty Clap". The Dix came onto the scene in 1957 as The Bangkoks with original members Orgynius, Peter O’Tool, Tro John, and John Handcock. The Bangkoks boasted a top ten hit called "Love Biscuit" which was the anthem of every blue-lighted house party in 1962. The Bangkoks reassembled as the Dix in 1965 with the addition of new group members Dik Gracin and the Jonsun Brothers thus creating a brand new sound that could only be described as "Orgasmic". The Dix do more than just hit the spot, their cataclysmic rhythms and harmonies combined with their explosive dance moves makes The Dix one of the best groups to grace the recording industry. Almost 40 years after the tragic break up of The Dix, hip-hop pioneer and musicologist Prince Paul (De La Soul, Handsome Boy Modeling School) unearths The Dix lost recording The Art of Picking Up Women via! | | Joe Ross’ writing - and this project that so beautifully showcases that prolific talent—typifies the unique, wildly varied bluegrass from the Northwest. Take a glimpse at the pickers he’s gathered…The James King Band, Ron Stewart, Tim Crouch, Scott Vestal, Randy Kohrs, Bryan Bowers & many others. They’re distinguished, top-notch players hailing from all over the geographical—& instrumental—map. “Many A Blue Moon” sounds like it came straight from a lost 8-track under the grubby bus seat of Jimmy Martin. The girl is gone & the old boy is crying, all to the ultra-traditional drive of the great Ron Stewart’s fiddle & banjo. The moon is blue & so is the singer. Then pause 4 seconds. Here comes equally great talent from the distant fringe of bluegrass—Radim Zenkl’s whistle & Bryan Bowers’ autoharp—called together by a 5-minute ode to . . . to what? To a half-dozen carefully enumerated academic philosophies. Bluegrass whiplash, you bet! Welcome to Oreg... (less)Artist: Joe Ross | $11 - $14 2 Merchants |
| | Hi Records was a label with personality, thanks in large part to its strongman, Willie Mitchell. Generally pictured as the rambunctious little brother of Stax, Hi actually dates back to 1957, but its heyday coincided with label golden-boy Al Green's commercial flowering in the '70s. Hi Times opens with a 1959 track from old Elvis sideman Bill Black and ends with a 1977 recording from Green's The Belle Album , which pretty much signaled the end of his (or anyone else's) top-dog-of-soul reign. In between, there's a neat sampling of Memphis sounds highlighted by the '70s classics of Ann Peebles, Syl Johnson, O.V. Wright, and Otis Clay. --Steven Stolder (less)Capitol | $158 amazon.com |
| | The several strains running through this kid-ready TV-soundtrack disc--pop and R&B boy groups, '70s and '80s Top 40 nostalgia, modern-rock stars, the Spice Girls, and one little-heard Geffen signing--hold together surprisingly well, like the mix tape proffered by the heroine of Ben Folds Five's "Kate." Backstreet Boys' "Hey Mr. DJ (Keep Playin' This Song)" displays them at their most Michael Jackson-esque, as Robyn's "Show Me Love" does at hers. The Cardigans' "Blah Blah Blah" fits the show's wiseacre tone, and Matthew Sweet's "Magnet & Steel" is a remake that's been waiting to happen for years. Good stuff. --Rickey Wright (less)Geffen Records | $1 amazon.com |
