 | Relaxing at the top of the Nielsen ratings, C.S.I. Crime Scene Investigation: The Complete Fifth Season stretched its legs a little to wander into the more grisly, more disturbing, and altogether more personal. "Down the Drain" showed the first overt romantic moment--in the form of a near-kiss--between Catherine Willows (Marg Helgenberger) and Warrick Brown (Gary Dourdan), which was discussed at length in the commentary and behind-the-scenes featurette as "a big moment." After that tease, the series pulled back and plunged into some of its most disturbing crimes yet. In "King Baby," a wealthy, middle-aged murder victim turns out to have lived as a baby, complete with adult-sized nursery; in "4x4," a personal trainer's face is eaten away from the inside out due to toxic mold in his house; in "Compulsion," a teen boy kills his younger brother for revealing that the older brother wets the bed. The biggest change in this season is an HR one: new director Conrad Ecklie (Marc Vann) spli... (less) Actors: C.S.I., Monique Edwards | $28 - $50 17 Merchants |
| | Twenty years after their debut Please , Cubism proves the Pet Shop Boys were still going strong in 2006. Filmed at Mexico City's Auditorio Nacional, it's a spirited celebration of their minimalist dance-pop aesthetic. As Neil Tennant says in his introduction, "Welcome to an evening of electronic entertainment." (He'll proceed to sprinkle a few Spanish words throughout his spare stage patter.) The full line-up features a dark-suit and top hat-sporting Tennant on vocals, neon hoody and baseball cap-clad Chris Lowe on keyboards, two singers, and two dancers--half dressed like Tennant, half like Lowe (and all will change outfits a few times before the show is over). During the 103-minute program, the duo covers most of the highlights from their career, with the emphasis on material from Actually , Introspective , Very , and Fundamental . Notable omissions include the entirety of 1999's Nightlife and 1987 single "What Have I Done to Deserve This," but there's no way to do justice to the ... | | Top Of The World Tour Live was recorded live on-stage during the North American leg of the Dixie Chicks historic 2003 world tour, which consisted of 79 shows in North America, Europe and Australia. The album and DVD bring together definitive performances of songs from all three of the Dixie Chicks multi-platinum albums: 1998's Wide Open Space (the best-selling debut album in country music history), 1999's Fly (the first album by a country group to debut at #1 on the Billboard Top 200) and 2002's Home (which earned the Dixie Chicks the distinction of being the first country group and the first female group, in the SoundScan era, to have had two #1 debuts on the Billboard 200). The 2 CD version of Top Of The World Tour Live features 22 songs by the Dixie Chicks while the DVD showcases 18 songs and includes the bonus video, Top Of The World. Shortly after the Dixie Chicks announced the group's Top Of The World tour at a press conference in New York on February 20, 2003, the buzz was on. The group rapidly sold more than 1 million tickets for the 66 North American shows on the Top Of The World itinerary, with 51 shows selling out completely on the first day of sales. In fact, first day's sales for the Top Of The World tour--some 867,000 tickets--were the largest in music history, eclipsing records set by Madonna, U2, the Rolling Stones, the Backstreet Boys, *NSYNC, and Paul McCartney. Along the Top Of The World tour route, the Dixie Chicks were met by cheering fans and a fervent press. ....when the Dixie Chicks step onstage, wrote Dave Ferman while reviewing a Dallas performance for the Star-Telegram, all is right with their world -- and with their fans'....They received a fitting welcome from a sold-out American Airlines crowd -- which is to say, the all-ages/more-women-than-men audience went crazy from the beginning of the first song, Goodbye Earl, and hardly let up all night. Maverick defiance has always been the best part of the Dixie Chicks' appeal, along with the determination to hold onto something down-home as they reach for a mass audience, wrote Jon Pareles in a New York Times review of the Chicks' Madison Square Garden performance. Ms. Maines makes her voice leap and break in honky-tonk style, and the other two Dixie Chicks are not only singers but something rare among country hitmakers, female instrumentalists. Martie Maguire's fiddle and Emily Robison's banjo put a bluegrass streak into the band's arrangements, one reason they have been able to conquer the country mainstream without succumbing to it formulas. Michael Eck, reviewing an Albany, New York show for the Times Union, put it succinctly, ....the Chicks have changed the face of country music of late; and the women have done it by playing music of great melody, integrity and attitude. | | set][Non-U.S. format (PAL) region 2 U.K. DVD set - This will not play on many U.S./Canada DVD players. It requires a multi-region or region-free PAL compatible player.] Deed is a high-court judge who's made it to the top through sheer determination and character, without the help of the old boys network. Hating all things archaic and bureaucratic, his passion for justice and his maverick approach attract as many supporters as they do detractors. His humanity, and success in and out of court, make him a hero figure to some, but an enemy to others. Judge John Deed has become one of Martin Shaws defining roles. The sharp intellect, rakish charm, keen wit and passionate belief in justice were all qualities G F Newman had in mind for Martin when writing the series. (less) | $50 amazon.com |

Granted, it's corny and emotionally over the top. But there are strong emotions at play here in the tale of an unlikely team of singer and comedian (played by Midler and James Caan), who are brought together for a reunion show in their dotage. As they nervously anticipate seeing each other for the first time in years, they are flooded with memories of their earlier days as a hot show-biz couple whose own troubles always took second place to their patriotic urge to buoy our boys in uniform. Some say this was a veiled film version of the Martha Raye story; Midler gives it her all and Caan isn't half-bad. But director Mark Rydell lays on the schmaltz so thickly at times that it overpowers the tougher material. --Marshall Fine (less) | $35 amazon.com |
