In it a psychotically disgruntled war hero (Ed Harris) seizes the island prison of Alcatraz and threatens to wage chemical warfare against nearby San Francisco unless the government publicly recognizes the men who were killed under Harris's top-secret command. Nicolas Cage plays the biochemist who teams up with the only man ever to have escaped from Alcatraz (Sean Connery) in an attempt to foil Harris's terrorist scheme. As one might expect, what follows is an action-packed barrage of bullets, bodies, and climactic confrontations, replete with enough plot contrivances to give even the most jaded action fan cause for alarm. It's a load of hooey, but the cast is obviously having a grand old time, and there's enough wit to make the recycled action sequences tolerable. If you're ordering this movie ... | | Die / G Men / San Quentin / A Slight Case of Murder)Say "Warner Bros. in the '30s" and you're talking, first and foremost, about the tough, gritty, urban, street-smart movies that help define that American decade for us. Which means you're talking about James Cagney, Edward G. Robinson, and Humphrey Bogart: unpretty but charismatic guys with lived-in faces, and bodies that always seemed cocked, ready to spring. When one of them entered a room, he owned it, no matter how many people were there already. Their most celebrated habitat was the gangster picture. The genre didn't originate with them, but they, more than anybody else, defined it, gave it a face and a silhouette and a heartbeat. The films in this set were produced half a decade and more after Little Caesar and The Public Enemy made stars of Robinson and Cagney, respectively, and after repeal had begun to lend Prohibition the patina of nostalgia. The studio's gangster franchise was evolving, and so were the careers of its top stars. When it came to toughness, the boys c... From the frenetic 'Crazy Boys' to the melodic tour de force of 'Nothing Good About This Goodbye' to the electro laced ballad 'I’ll Be There' and the sultry, dirty bassline of 'Je M'Appelle' and her forthcoming single, 'I Said Never Again', a sex-with-your-ex anthem whose pummelling glam beats conjure an image of Suzi Quatro duetting with Adam & The Ants. | | From 1978-1981 the Titan label issued only eight records, but over the years their tiny catalog has crawled to the top of power-pop want lists worldwide and appeared on scads of bootleg cassettes, building a legacy to rival L.A. s Bomp or New York s Ork. Located in fly-over country, Titan was forced to start their own scene, import their own skinny ties, and scour Missouri for their own talent. Their midwest AM bubblegum roots are apparent in the likes of Gary Charlson, the Secrets*, Arlis!, Gems, Millionaire At Midnight, the Boys, J.P. McClain & the Intruders, Bobby Sky, and Scott McCarl, but Titan was clearly influenced by the glam-punk spit being hocked from the 100 Club stage. 30 years since they meekly flopped out their first 7 single, Kansas City s Titan Records finally returns to record bins everywhere in a deluxe two-disc retrospective with comprehensive 40-page booklet. | | Nappy Brown began his career as one of early rock's best vocalists. "Don't Be Angry," the 1955 breakthrough that kicks off this double-disc set of 36 sides for the Savoy label, displays his brilliant stylistic tics: melismas, stutters, a powerhouse vibrato, and the trademark "li-li-li-li-li" that he used to make his steel-edged baritone recognizable to the teen audience. These were techniques he adapted from singing in church as a boy in North Carolina and, later, touring in gospel groups. They served him well. "Don't Be Angry" reached the top of the R&B chart and became a No. 25 pop hit. But this is the eight-year story of how he became one of the great blues shouters of the 1950s, along with Wynonie Harris and Roy Brown. After tunes like disc one's "Goody Goody Gum Drop" threatened to turn his rubber-lipped fillips to self-parody, Brown matched his roots in spiritual singing to the corporal themes of the blues--much as Ray Charles did to ignite soul music. The result was hard-hitt... (less)Artist: Nappy Brown | $26 - $35 8 Merchants |
