 | Relaxing at the top of the Nielsen ratings, C.S.I. Crime Scene Investigation: The Complete Fifth Season stretched its legs a little to wander into the more grisly, more disturbing, and altogether more personal. "Down the Drain" showed the first overt romantic moment--in the form of a near-kiss--between Catherine Willows (Marg Helgenberger) and Warrick Brown (Gary Dourdan), which was discussed at length in the commentary and behind-the-scenes featurette as "a big moment." After that tease, the series pulled back and plunged into some of its most disturbing crimes yet. In "King Baby," a wealthy, middle-aged murder victim turns out to have lived as a baby, complete with adult-sized nursery; in "4x4," a personal trainer's face is eaten away from the inside out due to toxic mold in his house; in "Compulsion," a teen boy kills his younger brother for revealing that the older brother wets the bed. The biggest change in this season is an HR one: new director Conrad Ecklie (Marc Vann) spli... (less) Actors: C.S.I., Monique Edwards | $28 - $50 16 Merchants |
| | Twenty years after their debut Please , Cubism proves the Pet Shop Boys were still going strong in 2006. Filmed at Mexico City's Auditorio Nacional, it's a spirited celebration of their minimalist dance-pop aesthetic. As Neil Tennant says in his introduction, "Welcome to an evening of electronic entertainment." (He'll proceed to sprinkle a few Spanish words throughout his spare stage patter.) The full line-up features a dark-suit and top hat-sporting Tennant on vocals, neon hoody and baseball cap-clad Chris Lowe on keyboards, two singers, and two dancers--half dressed like Tennant, half like Lowe (and all will change outfits a few times before the show is over). During the 103-minute program, the duo covers most of the highlights from their career, with the emphasis on material from Actually , Introspective , Very , and Fundamental . Notable omissions include the entirety of 1999's Nightlife and 1987 single "What Have I Done to Deserve This," but there's no way to do justice to the ... | | set][Non-U.S. format (PAL) region 2 U.K. DVD set - This will not play on many U.S./Canada DVD players. It requires a multi-region or region-free PAL compatible player.] Deed is a high-court judge who's made it to the top through sheer determination and character, without the help of the old boys network. Hating all things archaic and bureaucratic, his passion for justice and his maverick approach attract as many supporters as they do detractors. His humanity, and success in and out of court, make him a hero figure to some, but an enemy to others. Judge John Deed has become one of Martin Shaws defining roles. The sharp intellect, rakish charm, keen wit and passionate belief in justice were all qualities G F Newman had in mind for Martin when writing the series. (less) | $50 amazon.com |

Granted, it's corny and emotionally over the top. But there are strong emotions at play here in the tale of an unlikely team of singer and comedian (played by Midler and James Caan), who are brought together for a reunion show in their dotage. As they nervously anticipate seeing each other for the first time in years, they are flooded with memories of their earlier days as a hot show-biz couple whose own troubles always took second place to their patriotic urge to buoy our boys in uniform. Some say this was a veiled film version of the Martha Raye story; Midler gives it her all and Caan isn't half-bad. But director Mark Rydell lays on the schmaltz so thickly at times that it overpowers the tougher material. --Marshall Fine (less) | $35 amazon.com |

| | Dr. Emmett Brown: Then tell me, "future boy," who is president in the United States in 1985? Marty McFly: Ronald Reagan. Dr. Brown: Ronald Reagan? The actor?! Who's vice president? Jerry Lewis? Filmmaker Robert Zemeckis topped his breakaway hit Romancing the Stone with this joyous comedy with a dazzling hook: what would it be like to meet your parents in their youth? Billed as a special-effects comedy, the imaginative film (the top box-office smash of 1985) has staying power because of the heart behind Zemeckis and Bob Gale's script. High schooler Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox, during the height of his TV success) is catapulted back to the '50s where he sees his parents in their teens, and accidentally changes the history of how Mom and Dad met. Filled with the humorous ideology of the '50s, filtered through the knowledge of the '80s (actor Ronald Reagan is president, ha!), the film comes off as a Twilight Zone episode written by Preston Sturges. Filled with memorable effects and tw... (less) Director: Robert Zemeckis ♦ Actors: Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, Crispin Glover, Thomas F. Wilson | $10 - $25 13 Merchants |

In it a psychotically disgruntled war hero (Ed Harris) seizes the island prison of Alcatraz and threatens to wage chemical warfare against nearby San Francisco unless the government publicly recognizes the men who were killed under Harris's top-secret command. Nicolas Cage plays the biochemist who teams up with the only man ever to have escaped from Alcatraz (Sean Connery) in an attempt to foil Harris's terrorist scheme. As one might expect, what follows is an action-packed barrage of bullets, bodies, and climactic confrontations, replete with enough plot contrivances to give even the most jaded action fan cause for alarm. It's a load of hooey, but the cast is obviously having a grand old time, and there's enough wit to make the recycled action sequences tolerable. If you're ordering this movie ... | | Die / G Men / San Quentin / A Slight Case of Murder)Say "Warner Bros. in the '30s" and you're talking, first and foremost, about the tough, gritty, urban, street-smart movies that help define that American decade for us. Which means you're talking about James Cagney, Edward G. Robinson, and Humphrey Bogart: unpretty but charismatic guys with lived-in faces, and bodies that always seemed cocked, ready to spring. When one of them entered a room, he owned it, no matter how many people were there already. Their most celebrated habitat was the gangster picture. The genre didn't originate with them, but they, more than anybody else, defined it, gave it a face and a silhouette and a heartbeat. The films in this set were produced half a decade and more after Little Caesar and The Public Enemy made stars of Robinson and Cagney, respectively, and after repeal had begun to lend Prohibition the patina of nostalgia. The studio's gangster franchise was evolving, and so were the careers of its top stars. When it came to toughness, the boys c...
