| | Best known for his improvisational work on both the US and UK versions of Whose Line is it Anyway?, Greg Proops brings his unique brand of erudite observational humor to the people with his new CD Joke Book. Greg starts off light by taking the listener on a romp through America, then delves straight into what he does best: attacking the stupidity of our popular culture and political luminaries, going after George W. The Decider Bush, Dick Cheney, major league baseball and Michael Jackson in turn. Not for the monosyllabic comedy aficionado, Proops never strays too far into lofty territory without bringing it back around to some good, old-fashioned offensive humor. Listeners are in for a good filthy laugh, and Proops masterfully weaves the high-brow and low-brow throughout the hour-long Joke Book. Regardless of political bent, you re sure to spend an inordinate amount of time nodding in agreement when Proops points out that, in this country, apparently prosecution is based on l... | | The Red Button is made up of Los Angeles-based singer-songwriters Seth Swirsky and Mike Ruekberg. Ruekberg's indie credentials are rock solid as writer and singer for beloved Minneapolis-based pop-rockers Rex Daisy and wrote the soundtrack for an underachieving but beloved indie film (Dummy, starring Adrien Brody). Swirsky's legitimate music credentials are impressive: He's written hit songs for dozens of artists, ranging from Al Green to Tina Turner to Taylor Dayne. (He's also written three hugely successful books about baseball!) The two met in 2004, when Seth was recording his first solo album, Instant Pleasure (which went on to win Best Pop Album at the 2005 Los Angeles Music Awards). They shared one passion above all: A love of concise, melodic pop songs. She's About to Cross My Mind is the result of that meeting: eleven pop songs created, says Goldmine Magazine, the way God and Paul McCartney must have intended. | | Who said ''They aint making Jews like Jesus anymore''? It was, of course, country musics resident iconoclast Kinky Friedman. These days, youll find more Kinky Friedman books in bookstores than Kinky Friedman records in record stores. Were trying to change that by issuing his historic second and third LPs together on one CD. The second LP included the now-classic They Aint Making Jews Like Jesus Anymore , as well as Kinkys version of Billy Swans hit song Lover Please (Rock-a-Billy Swan had served an apprenticeship with Kinky). By the time of the third LP, Kinky was on Bob Dylans Rolling Thunder Revue and had moved to Dylans record label. Dylan gave him a song he had yet to record, Catfish (dedicated to the great baseball pitcher Catfish Hunter), Eric Clapton was on hand to play guitar, and Ringo Starr did a narration on one song. It was an all-star event, and, like the second LP, has never been reissued in Europe. CD Digipac with 40-page booklet. (less)Artist: Kinky Friedman | $23 - $27 2 Merchants |
| | "Some people say there are better games than baseball. They are wrong." Tom Boswell, The Washington Post "The first thing in my life I ever did right," muses John McCutcheon, "was baseball." Since that day in 1959 when the lanky seven-year-old showed up a year too early for Little League tryouts (they took him anyway) McCutcheon has done quite a few other things right. With over thirty-five years of international concert touring, six Grammy nominations, countless awards, over thirty recordings and numerous books under his belt, he's been a busy man. With the release of "Sermon on the Mound" he s finally brought together two lifelong loves: music and baseball. Whether honoring the games heroes (Roberto Clemente, Cal Ripkin Jr., Jackie Robinson, PeeWee Reese), tackling the game s foul balls (steroids, John Rocker), celebrating street ball and Little League, or distilling it all down to its essence (the universal and heart-rending "Catch"), once again, McCutcheon's pen and eye a...
