 | More than any other sport, baseball is a game of numbers. Statistics and records help measure the greats of the game against their peers – against generations – and this ever-evolving record book is what helps give baseball renewed life. But not every mark in the game is destined to change, for there are but a few that are indeed unbreakable. Legendary pitcher Roger Clemens narrates Baseball’s Most Unbreakable Feats DVD, a detailed look at 10 seemingly untouchable baseball achievements. | | The Thomas Crown Affair)A stirring example of courage and the indomitable human spirit, for many John Sturges's The Great Escape (1963) is both the definitive World War II drama and the nonpareil prison escape movie. Featuring an unequalled ensemble cast in a rivetingly authentic true-life scenario set to Elmer Bernstein's admirable music, this picture is both a template for subsequent action-adventure movies and one of the last glories of Golden Age Hollywood. Reunited with the director who made him a star in The Magnificent Seven , Steve McQueen gives a career-defining performance as the laconic Hilts, the baseball-loving, motorbike-riding "Cooler King." The rest of the all-male Anglo-American cast--Dickie Attenborough, Donald Pleasance, James Garner, Charles Bronson, David McCallum, James Coburn, and Gordon Jackson--make the most of their meaty roles (though you have to forgive Coburn his Australian accent). Closely based on Paul Brickhill's book, the various escape attempts, scrounging, forging, and fe... | | It seems elementary in the age of mega-league professional sports, many of which have been revolutionized by African American athletes, to point out that before Jackie Robinson major league baseball was lily white. The Negro Leagues were the crucible where African American players honed their skills. But it took over two decades, until Robert Peterson published Only the Ball Was White in 1972, to get a good glimpse at the stars and journeyman players of the Negro Leagues. It took even longer, until 1992, for Peterson's book, reprinted in a new edition, to garner its deserved critical acclaim. Well, Peterson's book cues up this documentary, which is narrated thoughtfully by Paul Winfield. Throughout Only the Ball , the footage of stars and Hall of Famers such as Buck Leonard, Roy Campanella, Jimmy Crutchfield, and the ever-fascinating Satchel Paige is excellent. Winfield and the players demonstrate abundantly that while the Negro Leagues were an implicit illustration of the absolut... | | One of the greatest baseball players of all time, "Hammerin’ Hank" dominated the sport with a quiet dignity and undeniable strength. Known as the homerun king, he led the league in homeruns four times, was the only player to hit at least 30 homeruns in 15 seasons and finished his career as the all-time home run leader with 755, shattering the record set by Babe Ruth. However, as Aaron approached Ruth’s hallowed and seemingly unbreakable mark, his moment of triumph was sadly marred by racism and resentment. Through exclusive interviews and thrilling footage, relive the high-powered hits and the dramatic runs, but most importantly, witness the courage of the quiet man with the loud bat who overcame adversity to play his way into the history books and the hearts of fans everywhere. | | Like a juicy page-turner, Ken Burns's two-hour documentary on the history of radio is packed with tantalizing ingredients: power, greed, broken friendships, narcissistic heroes, and tragic players. Adapted from Tom Lewis's absorbing book, Empire follows three Americans who crafted Guglielmo Marconi's discovery of radio waves into a powerful component of the 20th century: foppish inventor Lee de Forest; Edwin Howard Armstrong, the engineer's engineer; and Russian immigrant David Sarnoff, who became head of RCA. This project came between Burns's mammoth Civil War and Baseball documentaries, and he departs from him usual structure. Instead of having actors read the letters of the participants, Burns relies on narrator Jason Robards. Because the subject matter is relatively new, there's abundant information on the three men, including on-air interviews with those who knew them. Burns's ability to marry image and sound (often old broadcasts) is a wonder, making this film as poetic as it ... | | In years to come 1998 will be remembered as one of the finest in the history of baseball. Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa slugged their way into the record books, and David Wells pitched a perfect game. Roger "The Rocket" Clemens reached the giddy heights of the 3,000 plateau. Cal took a day off. And then there were the Yankees. Fittingly, it was the Bronx Bombers who penciled in the final emphatic exclamation point of the season, by sweeping the San Diego Padres in four games. A season that saw them brush aside all opposition while on their way to 125 wins would have been incomplete without this victory. The official Major League Baseball video recaps the regular season of the Padres and Yanks, before following them through the playoffs, and then on to the World Series. The inspired San Diego team, led admirably by the ageless yet priceless Tony Gwynn, Kevin Brown, and Wally Joyner, encountered a Yankee team too experienced and too deep, from wily veterans like David Cone and Paul O'Ne...
