 | Inspired by the lovable Saturday Night Live white-boy blues schtick of Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi, director John Landis seemingly threw every harebrained stunt he could imagine--and millions of dollars in production costs and wrecked autos--onto the screen. The resulting film could have been mistaken for a bad case of Hunter S. Thompson's D.T.'s, but Landis never shortchanged the music: Cab Calloway, James Brown, Aretha Franklin, and Ray Charles all get their moment in the spotlight. Miraculously, the chic-shabby Blues Brothers, anchored by the Stax rhythm section of Cropper and Dunn, hold their own against the legends, perhaps by the sheer joy and love they have for the music. --Jerry McCulley (less)Artist: The Blues Brothers | $6 - $24 12 Merchants |

 | The world was hardly waiting with baited breath for a sequel to John Landis' endearingly sloppy "Blues Brothers." In fact, "Blues Brothers 2000" left nary a vapor trail in theaters on its way to unsuspecting video and cable patrons. Misguided, though lovingly executed, the cross-generation soundtrack makes as much room for Johnny Lang and John Popper as it does for Wilson Pickett, Junior Wells and Paul Butterfield. And how can you not like a record that treats Fred Steiner's classic "Perry Mason Theme" to blues treatment? --Jerry McCulley (less)Artist: Blues Brothers | $6 - $21 12 Merchants |

The music from the Coen brothers' Depression-era film taps into the source from which the purest strains of country, blues, bluegrass, folk, and gospel music flow. Producer T Bone Burnett enlists the voices of Alison Krauss, Gillian Welch, Emmylou Harris, Ralph Stanley, and kindred spirits for performances of traditional material, in arrangements that are either a cappella or feature bare-bones accompaniment. Highlights range from the aching purity of Krauss's "Down to the River to Pray" to the plainspoken faith of the Whites' "Keep on the Sunny Side" to Stanley's chillingly plaintive "O Death." The album's spiritual centerpiece finds Krauss, Welch, and Harris harmonizing on "Didn't Leave Nobody but the Baby," a gospel lullaby that sounds like a chorus of Appalachian angels. --Don McLeese 1. | 2008 reissue of this soundtrack to the 1955 motion picture featuring vocal performances from Peggy Lee, Ella Fitzgerald and Pete Kelly. Four years before it reached the big screen Pete Kelly's Blues had started out as an NBC radio drama in 1951. It starred 31 year old Jack Webb in the title role. Better known for his portrayal of Police Sergeant Joe Friday in Dragnet, Jack Webb was an actor with one facial expression - deadpan - and a voice to match. It was the worldwide success of Dragnet that convinced Warner Brothers to stump up two million dollars for the Pete Kelly's Blues project. With the script and most of the cast in place, a group of seasoned Jazz musicians was assembled to soundtrack the onscreen miming by the likes of Webb, Lee Marvin, Martin Milner and other actors.
