| | Power Pop is a cross between the crunching hard rock of The Who and the sweet melodicism of The Beatles and The Beach Boys, with the ringing guitars of The Byrds thrown in for good measure. Power Pop bands filled a void left by The Beatles when they broke up in 1970. Throughout the early ’70s, several bands, most notably Badfinger, Raspberries and Big Star, established the sound of Power Pop, with a whole array of like-minded bands emerging in the later part of the decade. Groups like Cheap Trick, The Knack, The Romantics, Dwight Twilley, Raspberries, and Badfinger had the biggest hits, but The Flamin’ Groovies, Shoes, and 20/20 among others became Power Pop favorites. This is the first comprehensive single disc overview of Power Pop ever assembled. It includes just about every major band of the genre and is filled with non-stop Power Pop classics. Featured here are several tracks previously unavailable on CD, including the single version of The Knack’s Top 10 hit "Good Gir... (less)Artist: Various Artists | $13 - $23 11 Merchants |

| | "German reissue features 17 bonus tracks. UK 1960s psych-pop scarcely gets more seminal than this. The Zombies' '68 swan song is their crowning achievement, a Day-Glo, baroque-tinged masterpiece on a par with PET SOUNDS or SGT. PEPPER'S. Like the Beatles, the Zombies had left their Merseybeat sound far behind by the late '60s, pursuing instead a moodier, more sophisticated sound. ""Butcher's Tale (Western Front 1914),"" a grimly haunting accordion-led WWI narrative would have been unimaginable on an earlier Zombies record, and the simmering, ominous classic ""Time of the Season"" is as far from ""She's Not There"" as ""Strawberry Fields Forever"" is from ""She Loves You."" Still, the peerless pop craftsmanship of keyboardist Rod Argent and bassist Chris White (the group's principal songwriters) makes for plenty of richly melodic gems, as realized by Colin Blunstone's breathy, angelic voice. The delicately beautiful ""A Rose for Emily"" and the sunny, optimistic ""This Will Be Our Year"" can melt even the coldest of hearts. The 2004 reissue's bonus cuts (equally as entrancing as the initial tracks) and top-notch remastering further secure ODESSEY & ORACLE's status as an absolute must-own.Rolling Stone (12/11/03, p.114) - Ranked #80 in Rolling Stone's ""500 Greatest Albums Of All Time"" - ""...Its baroque psychedelic arrangements continue to exert a powerful influence..."" Rolling Stone (2/1/69, p.28) - ""...a very high level of musicianship and creativity....they have handled the problems of added orchestration and elaborate production quite well [here]...one of England's very best rock bands."" Mojo (Publisher) (p.124) - 4 stars out of 5 -- ""[T]he album has become an evergreen thanks to its Beach Boys-styled voices, its very English strain of melancholy and bassist Chris White's idiosyncratic writing...""" Engineers include: Jim Dickinson, John Fry, Richard Roseborough. Recorded at Ardent Studios, Memphis, Tennessee. Includes liner notes by Rick Clark. Big Stars's third album, THIRD (also known as SISTER LOVERS) was recorded in 1974 but not released until 1978 and was never widely available. Two bonus tracks have been added. Digitally remastered Japanese edition features an LP-style sleeve. CD comes in Jpn LP Sleeve. After Big Star released RADIO CITY, they fell apart, leaving Alex Chilton to record in 1975 what was later released as THIRD (AKA SISTER LOVERS). The album is strikingly different from everything Chilton has done before or since. With pained outpourings such as the haunting ""Holocaust,"" it holds its own against rock's greatest monuments to existential angst, from TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT to BRYTER LATER. It also ranks alongside the Beach Boys' SMILE as perhaps the only ""classic"" album with no set sequence. Chilton never bothered to sequence it because, upon its completion, no label wanted to release it. It finally came out four years later, and since then, while it has appeared on several labels, no two have used the same track order.Rolling Stone (3/19/92, p.87) - 5 Stars - Classic - ""...Chilton's untidy masterpiece...baroque, guitar-driven pop...one of the most idiosyncratic, deeply felt and fully realized albums in the pop idiom..."" Q (5/8/92, p.90) - 4 Stars - Excellent - ""...Never did depression bordering on psychosis sound so compelling in popular music..."" Village Voice (3/2/93, p.5) - Ranked #4 in the Village Voice's list of the 10 Best Reissues Of 1992. Mojo (Publisher) (3/01/04, p.55) - Included in Mojo's The 67 Lost Albums You Must Own! - ""SISTER LOVERS was desolate, nocturnal, frosty, but translated Chilton's frustrations into sublime music."" | | The Zildjian Armand 10 Inch Splash is perfect for bright and clear splash accents and an excellent addition to any setup. From Hendrix to the Stones to the Beatles to Cream and more, the greats recorded with these incredible cymbals and now Zildjian has brought it all back. Introducing The Armand Zildjian Cymbal Series... The Avedis Zildjian Co, the world's leading cymbal manufacturer is proud to introduce a new line of cymbals named for the man who helped guide Zildjian into the 21st Century. The Armand Zildjian Cymbal Series includes nine new models and is based on the popular 19-inch Armand Beautiful Baby Ride. This series captures the classic A sound of the 1960's that helped define a musical era and includes 20 and 21-inch Rides, 16 and 18-inch Medium Thin and Thin Crashes, 13 and 14-inch HiHats and a 10-inch Splash. All are available in a Traditional finish. The new Armand Series is part of the A Zildjian range of cymbals, but offers its own unique characteristics. New shaping techniques create a slightly lower profile than the current A Zildjians and help to offer a special warm and smooth blend of overtones. Lighter weight specifications promote a faster cymbal response with special lower pitched overtones without loss of projection potential, and a tighter lathe pattern on the top of each model results in a unique feel. The 20 and 21-inch Armand Rides are medium-thin in weight and offer a sweet shimmering quality of overtones without loss of control or Ride articulation and feature a larger sized cup for excellent bell access. The existing 19-inch Armand Ride features a three-rivet cluster and Armand's signature and Beautiful Baby laser etched into the cymbal. The 16 and 18-inch Armand Medium Thin Crashes contain a robust body of overtones while cutting easily through with a bright and fast response. The 16 and 18-inch Armand Thin Crashes are extra fast, bright and shimmering with a warm full blend of overtones. Perfect for bright and clear accents, the paper-thin weight 10-inch Armand Splash will complement any set-up. Featuring a medium-thin weight top and a medium weight bottom, the 13 and 14-inch Armand HiHats have a fast response and an articulate cymbal sound with a warm chick and are versatile enough for almost any style of music. During the explosion of rock and pop music of the 60's, the great drummers of groundbreaking bands used A Zildjian cymbals to make their mark. You can hear Zildjian's distinctive sound in the great recordings of that era, from The Beatles to The Beach Boys, from Cream to The Jimi Hendrix Experience, from The Rolling Stones to Chicago. The new Armand Series resurrects those sounds with these exciting new models. (less)Zildjian | $90 American Musical Supply |
| | One CD for each decade -- from the '40s to the present -- chronicle the defining artists of popular music over the past 60 years. Capitol Record's inaugural batch of 78 rpm shellac records was released by its founding partners Johnny Mercer, Glenn Wallichs and Buddy DeSylva in the summer of 1942. This exquisitely designed, digitally-remastered 96-track, 6-CD boxed set pays tribute to the defining artists of popular music history - from Stan Kenton, Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra to Peggy Lee, the Kingston Trio and the Beach Boys; from the Beatles (the first time their music has ever been included on a multi-artist compilation), the solo careers of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr, the Band and Pink Floyd to Merle Haggard and Duran Duran; from Bonnie Raitt, Everclear and Garth Brooks to Kylie Minogue, Radiohead, Coldplay and The Vines. CAPITOL RECORDS: 1942-2002 is released in two versions: the Deluxe version is packaged in a 10x10 box, with a full-size 144-page clothbound coffee table collector's volume of classic artist photographs by the world's greatest photographers. The Special version is packaged in a brick format, with a smaller 72-page photograph booklet. Both boxed set versions will contain the same CDs, along with booklets containing extensive discography information, including many track annotations that have been compiled for the very first time. Each of the six CDs cover a decade's worth of landmark performances - starting with Ella Mae Morse with Freddie Slack's Orchestra's Cow-Cow Boogie, Capitol's top 10 pop/R&B crossover hit from the summer of 1942 - to current Capitol hits from Coldplay, Kylie Minogue and The Vines. The massive compendium of hits features dozens of RIAA gold, platinum, multi-platinum, Grammy, Down Beat, Billboard, CMA, Juno, and Brit award-winning recordings. Capitol Records President and CEO Andrew Slater served as compilation producer for CAPITOL RECORDS: 1942-2002 and authored the project's introductory essay. In some ways, this collection is the story of three generations of American music, says Slater. It pays homage to the artists who make up the legacy of Capitol Records, and for anyone who has ever been touched by them. CAPITOL RECORDS: 1942-2002 also includes newly-commissioned liner note essays recalling each decade, written by a specially chosen team of respected music journalists and critics including Nat Hentoff (the '40s); Alan Light (the '50s); Anthony DeCurtis (the '60s); Ashley Kahn (the '70s); Charles M. Young (the '80s); and David Fricke (the '90s). Capitol Records was born of the friendship between hit songwriter Johnny Mercer and renowned record and electronics store owner Glenn Wallichs. Their desire to create an artist-friendly West Coast-based record company to rival the New York-based major labels came to fruition when Buddy DeSylva, the head of Paramount Pictures, agr (less)Capitol Records - 08854063 | $205 Buy.com |
