| | The Clutters grew organically out of a garage in Nashville, TN. Their sound is vintage, hooky, and more than anything, fun. On their second long-player, The Clutters sound like a polished 70's rock 'n' roll act-- poised to rock your face off or destroy a hotel room. Like Tennessee colleagues Kings of Leon, The Clutters produce raucous and catchy tunes appropriate for running from the cops, bar fighting, breaking out of jail, or similar illicit activity. Thunderous guitar and drums are bolstered by controlled-angst vocals. Antique keyboard sounds outline hooky melodies. The raw, country-tinged tracks on Don't Believe A Word will undoubtedly be the most fun listening experience you've had in ages. Any critic who has recently etched the words "rock 'n' roll is dead" has yet to hear the classic sound of The Clutters. (less)Artist: The Clutters | $10 - $15 6 Merchants |
| | After a lengthy sabattical spent contemplating Jesus, the never-less-than-mighty Moose return with their 4th and most perfectly-formed album (and their first North American release since their brush with Virgin Records and their tour of the USA with The Cocteau Twins). "High Ball Me" is an as-near-as-dammit realisation of the perrenial Moose fixations of classic 60s / 70s pop, heart shredding country & western, stellar songwriting (of the Nillson / Hazelwood school), and borderline-melodic guitar mangling. The amalgam of these influences is one of the best and most diverse pop albums of the century so far, and the greatest record the House of Love never managed to make despite always threatening to. With the emphasis always and firmly on tune and harmony, the 11 tracks rush forth in a swell of sweeping strings, shimmering guitars, rousing organs, rattling bongos, Joe Meek-esque antique effects, and too many other beautiful ideas to take in at once. | | Having staked their reputation on a sometimes lewd and always entertaining theatrical live show, THE BITTER TEARS use their new release to portray their creative growth as both musicians and storytellers. The album utilizes smart and direct pop structures to drive the menacing, old-school country twang of the songs. Known for being over-the-top, the ironic simplicity employed on tracks like Slay The Heart Of The Earth showcase the band s conviction. Just as in their live show, no one breaks character. The raw material for the record was written late at night and early in the morning, with a threepenny orchestra s worth of instruments to help the process along. The result sounds antique, without sounding antiquated. The bawdy tales of revenge, lust and corruption are backed by a dusty array of beat-up instruments: horns, oboes, violins...each helping to provide the same dramatic sparks that win people over on-stage. ...thank God for the creative, uber-feisty cabaret edge on this [Bit...
