|  | Dennis W. Archer, former Mayor of the City of Detroit (before the Kwame Kilpatrick administration), delivers a keynote speech at the Lansing Center on July 9, 1997. The topic was Strengthening Michigan Families. The event was sponsored by several non-profit and statewide organizations. Dennis Archer is the first African American to be president of the National Bar Association. He is often credited for rebuilding the City of Detroit during the Clinton administration and was awarded several billion in empowerment zone funding for economic revitalization. Before leaving office he requested assistance from the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate and eradicate the corruption that has completely enveloped the city under the Kilpatrick administration.
