The book begins with a poem commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Brown Vs. the Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas Supreme Court decision which will be May 17, 2004. This is because Linda Hughes-Dorame felt particularly inspired by this dramatic historical event as she began school in Topeka at the wake of the decision in 1954. Her older sister previously attended the segregated Washington Elementary School But in September 1954, they both entered Parkdale Elementary School along with other black children who had previously been denied admission. The authors Refered to Parkdale as the Once forbidden school in her poem, The US Supreme Court Rule. Years later the author was told her father had been elected president of the Parents Teacher Association at this school which engendered some pride in the author. Linda Hughes-Dorame said that when asked about how she feels about the decision, her best response is that Brown was not an end but a beginning. The decision set a precedent for achieving full equality not only for Americans, but for people throughout the world. It has mostly proved to be a very fruitful decision, and however discouraging the attainment of its goals may appear, imagine how our lives would be had it not been for Brown.
