| | AMERICAN CONSITITUTIONAL LAW provides a comprehensive account of the nation's defining document. Based on the premise that the study of the Constitution and constitutional law is of fundamental importance to understanding the principles, prospects, and problems of America, the text puts current events in terms of what those who initially drafted and ratified the Constitution sought to accomplish. Each volume examines the interpretations of a variety of sources, including the founding generation, the Supreme Court, lower federal courts and state judiciaries, and extrajudicial materials of constitutional significance (such as congressional acts and resolutions). Volume I focuses on federal rights and powers, and is appropriate for the first semester in the two-semester course sequence in Constitutional Law. | | Upon the Stars is a collection of poems and short stories by a mother and her teen-age daughter. As in their first book Roads and Reminiscences they have expressed their personal perspectives about nature and everyday life. It presents an interesting protrayal of contrasting perspectives of mother and daughter and promotes parent-child positive relationships. It may also encourage creativity on the part of other children and teenagers. The book begins with a poem commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Brown Vs. the Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas Supreme Court decision which will be May 17, 2004. This is because Linda Hughes-Dorame felt particularly inspired by this dramatic historical event as she began school in Topeka at the wake of the decision in 1954. Her older sister previously attended the segregated Washington Elementary School But in September 1954, they both entered Parkdale Elementary School along with other black children who had previously been denied admission. The authors Refered to Parkdale as the Once forbidden school in her poem, The US Supreme Court Rule. Years later the author was told her father had been elected president of the Parents Teacher Association at this school which engendered some pride in the author. Linda Hughes-Dorame said that when asked about how she feels about the decision, her best response is that Brown was not an end but a beginning. The decision set a precedent for achieving full equality not only for Americans, but for people throughout the world. It has mostly proved to be a very fruitful decision, and however discouraging the attainment of its goals may appear, imagine how our lives would be had it not been for Brown. The precedent set by Brown also enlivened a spirit that will remain forever with us as long as strive to promote tolerance, justice, and equality for all people. (less) | $4 A1Books |

| | When Jagdish Chadha, a Kenyan of Indian extraction, decided in 1974 to fight his impending deportation, he unwittingly stumbled into one of the most far-reaching separation-of-powers battles of this century. In 1983, when the United States Supreme Court ruled in his favor, it effectively threw out hundreds of laws--more laws than it had overturned in its entire previous history--including acts that dealt with war powers, arms sales, and a host of consumer and environmental matters. The encompassing nature of the ruling, Justice Powell observed in his concurrence, gives one pause.brIn recounting the Chadha case, legal scholar Barbara Craig takes the reader inside this epic constitutional battle, offering a first-hand glimpse at how constitutional issues are raised and resolved in our society. The Chadha case covers a broad canvas, involving high-level figures in the Ford, Carter, and Reagan administrations, influential congressmen, powerful interest groups such as the American Bar Association and Ralph Nader's Public Citizen, federal judges, and many others. Craig has interviewed nearly all the major participants--including Antonin Scalia, William French Smith, and Congressman Elliott Levitas--and has thoroughly combed the available legislative, administrative, and judicial records. The result is a well-documented, eye-opening narrative that tells not only of Chadha's battle to remain in America, but of a wide-spread struggle between Congress and the executive branch that will have ramifications far into the future.brEvery concerned citizen will want to read Chadha for its glimpse into the inner workings of politics American-style, and for the insights it provides into the health of the Constitution on the eve of its bicentennial.brAbout the Author:brBarbara Craig is Assistant Professor in the Department of Government at Wesleyan University.br (less) | $0 A1Books |
