| | Taking the evolution of the comic book as its subject, this History Channel documentary stands out by merit of its comprehensive scope and insight. Beginning with the early days of 1930s vigilantes and the patriotic characters of the 1940s, the program reveals the current complexity and range found in the pages of contemporary graphic novels, and explores the ways that cultural climates and popular attitudes are reflected in comic books. All the heavyweights weigh in, including Neil Gaiman (THE SANDMAN), Frank Miller (THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS), Stan Lee (SPIDER-MAN, THE SILVER SURFER), Kevin Smith (CHASING AMY), Will Eisner (THE SPIRIT), and others. Keith David, who voiced Spawn from the TV show, narrates the program, which is presented by Peta Wilson (LA FEMME NIKITA). In addition to the star-studded cast, however, the documentary has a lot to offer fans and neophytes alike, with analyses of the role of collecting in the comic book world, and the creation of such seminal entities as DC Comics and Marvel as well as characters like Dark Horse, the Incredible Hulk, and Wonder Women. Contextualizing the innovations and progress of the art form, this documentary is not just an important exploration of the graphic arts, but a fascinating look back at the shifting cultural concerns of a nation. | | A monstrous prehistoric beast lurks deep within a cave. It's one of many fearsome creatures, including flying bat-men and a fire-breathing three-headed monster, that dwell in a hellish underground labyrinth. The evil tyrant King Eurystheus plans on using this demon-spawn to destroy Goliath, the immortal warrior. The King has stolen a precious gem and hidden it in the cave, hoping to lure Goliath to his doom. When Goliath escapes unharmed, Eurystheus abducts the beautiful princess and chains her up in the dragon's lair. Goliath now must confront the gigantic beast in order to save the woman he loves. The success of Hercules (1957), with Steve Reeves, paved the way for a long succession of sword and sandal epics depicting the adventures of legendary heroes. Most, like Goliath And The Dragon (advertised as The mightiest adventure of them all!), were Italian imports, dubbed and re-titled for the U.S. market. American stars (such as Broderick Crawford) were often brought in to increase the box-office appeal. Stop-motion animator Jim Danforth (When Dinosaurs Ruled The Earth) filmed the special effects scenes of the dragon. | | If there's irony in the fact that the founding fathers of surf rock the Ventures hail from quarters not exactly renowned as bastions of sun-drenched wave-riding (Portland, Oregon, and Tacoma, Washington), it only stands to reason that their inspirations weren't exactly baggy-clad and bushy-blond-coiffed, either (Les Paul, Chet Atkins, Duane Eddy). But those unlikely roots did indeed spawn a 40-year career for the band as international stars and, more important, instrumental rock's first and foremost preservationists. This album replicates much of the Ventures' longtime tour repertoire, drawing on their own considerable hits ("Walk, Don't Run," "Perfidia," "Hawaii Five-O") as well as covers that range from Richard Rodgers ("Slaughter on 10th Ave.") to prime '60s bands like the Surfaris ("Wipe Out"), Marketts ("Out of Limits"), and Astronauts ("Baja"). All are performed with the verve and solid craftsmanship that has long characterized the band. Longtime fans should note the presenc... (less)Artist: The Ventures | $9 - $14 8 Merchants |
| | Welcome yourself to this "one man band” of multiple coagulated bass lines, mangled drum tracks, textural samples and synths, vocal dementia, and above all, commanding musicianship. Resonating like the illegitimate spawn of the AmRep family, this anything-but-straight-ahead composite of blackened, disfigured arrangements bristles with heart, rhythm, and a sickening menace. Witness a plethora of boundary-crushing, mind-throttling information crammed into one caustic half hour. This is the uncontrolled, unusual, and uncompromising sound of a musical visionary truly losing patience…and someone's bound to get hurt. Features artwork by Paul Nitsche (Dazzling Killmen/Skin Graft Comics), and there’s a bit of a surprise included. | | Silver Star was first conceptualized in the mid-1970s as a movie screenplay, complete with illustrations to sell the idea to Hollywood. Too far ahead of its time for Tinseltown, Jack instead adapted his 'Visual Novel' as a six-issue mini-series for Pacific Comics in the early 1980s, making it the last original creation of his career. King Kirby's final series is collected at last, this time reproduced from his powerful un-inked pencil art. Read the complete story of Ho-Geneticus, the New Breed of humanity that spawns both hero (Silver Star) and viallain (the nefarious Darius Drumm), leading to one of the most action-packed narratives and spellbinding climaxes ever conceived on a comics page. As a special bonus, read Kirby's provocative screenplay, reproduced in its entirety, including illustrations and never-published character sketches. Plus, there's pin-ups and other rare Kirby art, and a historical overview to put it all in perspective. A percentage of profits from this book go t... (less) | $16 Things From Another World |
| | Celebrating the music culture behind the movie THREAT, Kings Mob has pitted an all-star cast of the most beloved hardcore and metal bands against some of the world's most notorious digital hardcore and breakcore musicians. Genre-mashing soundtracks are not a new idea, with such hallowed predecessors as the Judgment Night and Spawn soundtracks, but THREAT breaks new ground both in this album's organic evolution (THREAT is the first indie movie produced by young people in the NYC hardcore punk, underground hip hop, and digital hardcore scenes) and in its unparalleled ferocity. Masterminded by THREAT's writer-director Matt Pizzolo, score contributor Alec Empire, and actor/score contributor David R. Fisher, "THREAT: Music That Inspired The Movie" is a brutal assault that matches the film's nihilistic philosophy and terrifying ultraviolence. Brooklyn's hardcore heroes Most Precious Blood join Berlin's Alec Empire of Atari Teenage Riot for the leadoff track: a gloves-off, no-holds-bar... | | "Japanese edition adds a bonus DVD. FRANCES THE MUTE, the highly anticipated follow-up to the Mars Volta's stunning debut, DE-LOUSED IN THE COMATORIUM, finds the band's masterminds, Cedric Bixler Zavala and Omar Rodriguez-Lopez (both formerly of At the Drive-In), diving further into their bizarre, unique sonic aesthetic. Here various forms of Latin music merge with ambient passages, jazzy interludes, and fierce progressive rock. The Latin influence, in fact, is more evident than ever, with Bixler Zavala often alternating between Spanish and English lyrics, and full-on salsa sections providing a melodic respite from the energetic chaos (particularly on ""L'Via L'Viaquez,"" which features pianist Larry Harlow). Despite the complexity of FRANCES THE MUTE's suite-like song structures, the tracks form a fascinating whole, never losing focus of the group's key elements--Bixler Zavala's stunningly expressive vocals and Rodriguez-Lopez's amazingly proficient guitar heroics. A challenging and fascinating album, FRANCES THE MUTE reinforces the Mars Volta's reputation as a bold, iconoclastic band.Rolling Stone (No. 969, p.108) - 4 stars out of 5 - ""[T]he Mars Volta's second album is an exhilarating transgression: concussive, nonlinear rhythms; mad-dog guitar alegebra; bloody-nightmare suites hung in bilingual free verse.
