 | Nonpoint-source pollution (NPSP) poses a special challenge to society's ability to manage its collective environmental good - especially surface and groundwater quality. Since there is no point', such as an outfall pipe, from which the pollution is being discharged and can be measured, pollution can reach the ambient environment without being monitored. Since management of air and water polution requires the definition and enforcement of limits on discharges or the imposition of fees on those discharges, inability to measure limits our ability to manage this environmental problem. This book presents a state-of-the-art review and discussion of economists' efforts to resolve this major problem and attempts to provide a way of working around it. The book sets forth the theoretical issues, modeling, and the actual programs set up to confront this issue. (less)Kluwer Academic Publishers - 9780792393078 | $113 - $275 3 Merchants |
| | In this clear and authoritative text, Richard Turco examines one of the most important problems facing the modern age -- air pollution. Based on his popular course at University of California, Los Angeles, this text, specifically designed for nonscience majors, offers a basic understanding of how the physical environment surrounding us functions and how human activities are affecting it, while presenting sufficient supporting details to hold the interest of science majors. It provides a comprehensive description of the atmospheric environment and details the foundation on which the science and policy of atmosphere-related environmental issues are based. Fundamental scientific concepts that determine the scope of a variety of environmental problems are introduced, including the behavior of atmosphere, basic chemical processes in the environment, and the properties of light and heat. Key logical, regional, and global pollution issues are addressed in terms of their implications for society and life. In his survey of local and regional issues--which include indoor air pollution, smog, and acid rain--the author identifies the principal sources and effects of pollutants and discusses the many ways in which people are exposed to environmental toxins. Global environmental issues, such as stratospheric ozone depletion, climate change, and greenhouse warming are treated in the same context as global environmental engineering. The physical and chemical principles central to all of these problems are placed in the perspective of real world events, and everyday experiences are used to familiarize students with these principles. Special care has been taken to provide illustrative examples and problems to help students hone their understanding of the concepts and ideas discussed, and to challenge their creative and deductive approaches to all environmental problems, thus requiring more than the rote memorization of facts. | | Air pollution in Tehran has become a major problem in recent years, due to the geographical position of the town, industries, and traffic. Most private and public vehicles are old and have no emission control systems. The Municipality of Tehran and the Department of Environment have started several actions to reduce pollution, with communication activities being part of their strategy. For better planning, and to make possible the monitoring and evaluation of the communication activities, a baseline study was completed in 2004 using direct interviews of 1,200 Tehran residents. The interviews covered aspects such as experiences, opions, knowledge, and willingness to act. Use of and trust in several information sources and media were also investigated, in order to select the best communication mix for future activities. | | This authoritative two volume collection illustrates the most important methods for valuing non-priced environmental goods. It will be essential reading for new researchers as well as providing an excellent source of well-known material for scholars already working in this area. The first volume provides a variety of papers on different applications of opportunity cost, travel-cost, hedonic price and contingent valuation methods which emphasise both theory and practice. Classic articles on discrete choice, non-use values and the WTA v. WTP controversy are included. It also includes contributions from psychologists which identify anomalies in economic theory as well as developing more robust evaluation methods. The second volume addresses the problem of evaluation when there are multi-attribute goods and programmes and considers how the validity of results can be assessed. Allocative mechanisms for environmental resources are also illustrated with analysis of some of the property rights issues surrounding damage to resources. A series of case studies evaluate major issues: biodiversity; wetlands; landscape; noise; safety and air pollution . The volume concludes with the transfer of benefit estimates between sites, the usefulness of meta-analysis and two thought provoking articles concerning the meaning of valuation. | | Aquagen Stabilized Oxygen oxygenates the body which helps to rid toxins and damaging free-radicals due to pollution and stress while increasing energy, improving health, immune function, and longevity. The oxygen in Aquagen is completely safe, non-toxic and hypo-allergenic to use and consume as a daily supplement. For over 50 years, medical practitioners and nutritionists have agreed that oxygen plays perhaps the most important role in sustaining a healthy body. Not until Aquagen has there been a supplement that provides so much concentrated, stabilized oxygen for the body to use. Without a dependable supply of oxygen, the cells in our bodies cannot function properly. In fact, experts agree that oxygen deficiency may be the major cause of all major degenerative diseases as well as playing the primary role in the correct functioning of our immune system. The power of oxygen. Nutrients, such as proteins, carbohydrates and fats, must have an excellent supply of oxygen present to efficiently convert their potential energy into usable energy. In order for new cells to be created to regularly replace the billions of cells in our bodies, hundreds of amino acids must link together using oxygen as the source of their building energy. Increased pollution in the air we breath, in the water we drink, in the food we eat, combined with increased daily stresses, and other dietary deficiencies, significantly reduce the amount of oxygen available for normal, healthy cellular metabolism. These pollutants, stresses and toxic chemicals affect our immune system which is designed to defend against invading pathogens. A tremendous amount of research exists that indicates when these same pathogens are subjected to adequate supplies of oxygen, they are inhibited or even destroyed. Oxygen is considered one of the most important ingredients in creating energy and therefore 'life'. Oxygen cannot be manufactured by or stored in our bodies. Oxygen is consumed by the cells in our bodies on a moment-to-moment basis and this is why we need a continual cleanser and detoxifier since it combines with the other toxic by-products of metabolism to create less harmful substances that can be eliminated by the body. Oxygen and Daily Supplements Aquagen as a dietary supplement provides the body with additional oxygen which may be previously lost to pollutants, toxins, and their oxygen-robbing factors. The oxygen in Aquagen works hand-in-hand with daily supplements like vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. (less)Aquagen Perfect Oxygenated Essentials | $43 Kalyx.com |
