Young Adult Literature is an in-depth literature survey that also models how to teach literature and reading to middle school and high school students. The first three chapters familiarize teacher candidates with the reading process of teens, discuss teen attitudes toward reading, and examine their interests and reading abilities. The genre chapters (Chapters 4-13) discuss genre characteristics and themes, survey young adult literature within the genre category, and examine relevant young adult literature in terms of style and structure. Each of the genre chapters also includes selections to illustrate methods for teaching reading to all learners, including methods that focus on writing skills, and provides the teacher candidate with additional resources in the field of young adult literature. | | CONNECTIONS... this revision includes more ways for teachers to connect with their adolescent students, and help them connect with good literature. The second edition of Young Adult Literature: Exploration, Evaluation, and Appreciation is comprehensive enough to ensure pre-service and practicing teachers an understanding of literature that will interest and engage today’s adolescents, yet remains slim enough to provide teachers an opportunity to read the rich literature now available for teens and pre-teens. This text stresses the need to connect adolescents with high quality and valued titles in every genre but also points out the burgeoning literature of graphic novels, comic books, and nontraditional titles on horror and humor that motivate young readers. New to this edition are teaching ideas that explore multiple readings to connect to new contexts as teachers engage students in an array of contemporary books. (less) | $40 CourseSmart |

| | No significant study of fairy-tale motifs in young adult literature exists as of today. iAmerican Young Adult Novels and Their European Fairy-Tale Motifs/I is the first organized study linking these two genres. This book examines fairy-tale motifs in eleven acclaimed young adult novels published in the 1980s. Five fairy-tale motifs appear in these novels. They are the helper, the unpromising hero/heroine, abandoned children, magic, and deception. PThe findings of this study suggest that English teachers in secondary schools could apply fairy-tale motifs in their teaching of young adult literature. Since students are familiar with fairy tales, using their motifs to interpret young adult novels is a reasonable approach and a good introduction to literary criticism. This method enables the students to compare different genres of literature, to figure out motifs that appear frequently in movies, plays, and television programs, and to appreciate literary works.
