| | Unfortunately, on Cards on the Table , the usually restrained James Harman is a little too understated. In his quest for the subtlety of his favorite blues classics, the bandleader has fallen prey to a certain blandness. Harman and his righthand man, multi-instrumental whiz Jeff Turmes, wrote 12 of the album's 13 tunes. None of them match the concise catchiness of the other song, Leiber & Stoller's "Last Clean Shirt," but numbers like "Sparks" and "Crazy by Degrees" describe relationships gone wrong with sly wit and striking guitar riffs. Friend-of-the-band Anson Funderburgh adds some guitar to "Temporary Blues," and "Where's My Thang" and "Black Under Black" get the full-blown R&B treatment of female backup singers and a horn section. All these songs should be much more vivid in live performance. --Geoffrey Himes (less)Black Top Records | $114 amazon.com |

| | After he was denied club work in New York for years because a marijuana conviction kept him from holding a "cabaret card," Thelonious Monk's late-'50s stays at the Five Spot provided him with a forum through which he could reach an audience and also acted as an intense musical laboratory. Misterioso and its companion disc, Thelonious in Action , were Monk's first professionally recorded live dates, and they feature the excellent 1958 quartet with tenorist Johnny Griffin stretching out on Monk tunes like "In Walked Bud" and "Evidence." Monk could not only find new dissonances, but he could also find new meanings for dissonance, imbuing his sometimes elliptical, even minimalist, compositions with a joyous playfulness. Griffin adds a strong blues flavor and some unlikely quotations that leaven his intense focus. If this nugget tickles the ear enough to drive you toward the completist's deep end, check out Monk's Complete Riverside Recordings mega-box. --Stuart Broomer (less)Artist: Thelonious Monk Quartet | $6 - $15 7 Merchants |
| | The emphasis on this 1987 session is Bill Frisell's broadening range as a composer and his increasing use of strange elisions between materials, adding the darkest clouds to greeting-card-perfect sunny days. "Little Brother Bobby" is a good example, mixing bright, country-simple parts with a dissonant countertheme that suggests a darkened cabaret. Even the very pretty "Lonesome," with its mix of near pedal-steel and acoustic guitar textures, resonates with a strange undercurrent from the reverberant bass. The band is Frisell's working quartet of the time, with cellist Hank Roberts, bassist Kermit Driscoll, and drummer Joey Baron, but the sonic resource can suggest a much larger group, the sustained tones and pitch-bending of Frisell and Roberts magnifying the sound. The title tune has Frisell's guitar line soaring over a backdrop of almost orchestral density, thanks largely to Roberts's cello. Driscoll often uses the lower register of his electric bass to add tremendous gravity, an... (less)Artist: Bill Frisell | $7 - $12 7 Merchants |

| | Why littleway? "We're a little family who loves music and wants to make a difference. Through our recordings and live appearances, we can make some positive music and contribute to causes that are important to us." That's the focus of this musical family as they release their first collection of original Christmas songs. Singer/songwriter Tom Franzak, a solo Christian pop artist since the 80's, teams up with 12-year-old daughter Lucy, who makes her singing debut on this recording of Christmas songs and carols, including some new, radio-ready classics! Of particular note are On Christmas Day, That's What Christmas Means, Emmanuel and A Christmas Card. There are also some wonderful moments where the whole family is featured, including 8-year-old Daniel who solos on Poor Little Christmas Tree . This is a family CD you'll want to add to your Christmas playlist! A portion of the proceeds from littleway christmas I will benefit autism research and resources. | | There was nothing nuanced about Joe Maphis, a star on Southern California's Town Hall Party television show in the 1950s. Playing a double-necked Mos-Rite Special guitar he helped design, Maphis was arguably the first picker to adapt fiddle breakdowns for guitar, and the hell-bent-for-leather title tune was his calling card. Occasionally, he'd turn in a relaxed, swinging performance like "Bully of the Town," or a seamless, well-paced workout like "Guitar Rock and Roll." But mostly he just burned, as on "Flying Fingers." Needless to add, this often worked better live than on record, and the real showstoppers here didn't even appear on the original 1957 album. On four of the seven bonus tracks, Maphis and protégé Larry Collins play rockin' country together like white on rice, especially on the charging "Hurricane," where they pull out all the stops, and the bluesy "Bye, Bye," a perfect balance of flash and restraint. --John Morthland (less)Artist: Joe Maphis | $10 - $20 2 Merchants |

| | While not a musical, the Broadway production of Suzan-Lori Parks's Pulitzer-winning Topdog/Underdog is drenched in music. Like the card tricks of the two small-time hustlers played by Jeffrey Wright and rapper Mos Def, the songs adeptly mix and match eras. Their year- and style-jumping adds to the play's unspecified time frame, all the while making for a sharp little snapshot of African American music over the past decades. Mos Def trying newly pilfered clothes to the tune of James Brown's "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag (Part 1)" is electrifying, while the juxtaposition of Jay Z, Muddy Waters, Wayne Shorter, Robert Johnson, and Wu-Tang Clan is provocative and exciting. Mos Def himself shows why he's one of the best MCs in contemporary hip-hop on "3-Card," while Jeffrey Wright hauntingly performs "Lincoln's Blues," a song written for the play by Parks (whose husband, Paul Oscher, used to play in Muddy Waters's band). --Elisabeth Vincentelli (less)Artist: Original Soundtrack | $1 - $5 2 Merchants |
