 | I'm delighted to be sharing this CD with an old friend and colleague, John Corigliano. And we are both, I think, delighted by the resplendent interpretations of Goldina and Loumbrozo. Gazebo Dances (1972) was originally written as a set of four-hand pieces dedicated to certain of my pianist friends. I later arranged the suite for orchestra and for concert band, and it is from the latter version that the title is drawn. The title Gazebo Dances was suggested by the pavilions often seen on village greens in towns throughout the countryside, where the public band concerts are given on summer evenings. The delights of that sort of entertainment are portrayed in this set of dances. As the title implies, Kaleidoscope is a colorful mosaic of changing symmetrical patterns, some infused with a ragtime feel, others highly lyrical in content. It received its world premiere at the Spoleto Festival (Italv) in 1961 by pianist Stanley Hollingsworth and Morey Ritt. (less)Phoenix USA | $40 amazon.com |

 | 2009 debut album from the Australian R&B singer/songwriter. Merriweather's first commercially released recording was a guest appearance on the track "All I Want" from Australian dance act Disco Montego's self-titled album in 2002. This was followed by a guest appearance on Mark Ronson's Here Comes the Fuzz album ("She's Got Me") in 2003. His debut solo single "City Rules" (produced by Ronson and featuring raps from New York MC Saigon) followed in early 2004. In 2005 he co-wrote and coproduced much of friend Phrase's debut album Talk With Force. A 2006/7 collaboration with Mark Ronson (a version of The Smiths' "Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before"), had huge commercial success in the UK where it was released as the lead-off single for Ronson's album Version. Now, Merriweather stands on his own as a unique and focused artist with Love & War. 12 tracks. Sony/BMG. (less)Artist: Daniel Merriweather | $7 - $34 6 Merchants |

 | The 1970s produced a peculiar school of singer-songwriters whose narrative-driven lyrics set them apart from their self-reflective peers. Think of David Ackles and Randy Newman on the fringes, and far nearer the mainstream, the "Captain Jack"-era Billy Joel and earnest-to-the-core Harry Chapin. Chapin first made a splash in 1972 with "Taxi," a claustrophobic little melodrama set in a cab. He made the top 20 two years later with the familial "Cat's in the Cradle." Though he'd never climb so high again, songs such as "W*O*L*D" and "Dance Band on the Titanic," and albums like Verities & Balderdash kept the folk crooner in the spotlight. From there, he championed a variety of social causes until he was killed in a 1981 auto accident. Story of a Life packages three discs of Chapin recordings in one attractive box. Given the singer's excesses (he wasn't the subtlest of artists, either as a writer or singer), that's a lot of Chapin. But fans will appreciate the loving liner essays from fam... | Their name says it all – Masters At Work. For over a decade, "Little Louie" Vega and Kenny "Dope" Gonzalez have shepherded dance music down new paths with their inventive production style and imaginative feel for different musical forms. The two native New Yorkers have amassed an overwhelming body of work in that time, one that includes hundreds of original productions, remixes and side projects, redefining the way we think of music in clubs. Vega and Gonzalez defiantly mix everything they can find – house, hip-hop, funk, disco, Latin, African and jazz – into a universal groove. And in doing so, MAW has become a cultural mélange unto itself, emblematic of the multicultural society in which we live. (less)Artist: Masters at Work | $18 - $34 4 Merchants |
