 | ACADEMY AWARD NOMINEE: BEST DOCUMENTARY FEATURE WINNER: BEST DOCUMENTARY - National Society of Film Critics WINNER: BEST DOCUMENTARY - New York Film Critics An Oscar nominee for Best Documentary and winner of the 1986 New York Film Critic s Circle non-fiction film prize, Marlene is a portrait of a remarkably strong-willed woman, stage-managing her career right up to the bitter end and brilliantly lifts the veil on a movie star of the brightest magnitude as she is fading into twilight. In September of 1982, Oscar winning actor and director Maximilian Schell (Julia, The Man in the Glass Booth) arrived in Paris for a series of on-camera interviews with Marlene Dietrich intended for a documentary film on the screen icon s life and work. Despite having agreed to participate, the near-recluse Dietrich withdrew permission for her Judgment at Nuremburg co-star to film in her flat. Instead, in over 40 hours of audio-taped interviews, the 81 year-old screen legend provoked a battle royale of ... | | At first glance, Nicholas Barker's documentary about four New York City singles seeking partners through personal ads looks like it's trying to be a hipper, East Coast version of the Cameron Crowe hit Singles . The characters--two men and two women who play themselves--address the camera with candid, earthy, and bitter observations about the dating scene. And the film titillates the viewer with male and female nudity within the first five minutes. But where Singles was brightened by goofy humor and a hard-hitting soundtrack, Unmade Beds is weighed down by its characters' desperation and a mostly lackluster musical score. While two of the characters are looking for long-term relationships, the more interesting pair have shallower goals: Brenda, a shapely Italian woman in her 40s, wants a man who will pay her bills in exchange for "sex a couple of times a month, maybe four." Mikey, a 54-year-old self-described Jack Nicholson/Harvey Keitel type, is looking for babes to take home for th... | ![Tadpole [Region 2]](http://img.shopbig.com/120/.jpg) | A clever tale of a young man infatuated with an older woman, featuring a brilliant comic performance by the wonderful Bebe Neuwirth. Tadpole is the childhood nickname of Oscar (Aaron Stanford), a precocious 15-year-old who disdains girls his own age and nurses an infatuation for his 40-something stepmother, Eve (Sigourney Weaver). But while home from school for Thanksgiving, Oscar gets drunk and falls in bed with Eve's best friend, Diane (Neuwirth), leading to a series of painfully funny scenes in which Oscar fears revelation while trying, desperately, to woo Eve. Tadpole isn't a great movie--the strong script is undercut by flat, unimaginative direction--but every scene with Neuwirth flares into high comedy. She doesn't even have to speak; a sardonic glance from Diane sends Oscar spinning into panic, and Neuwirth handles the part with delicious feline malice. Also featuring John Ritter as Oscar's academic father. --Bret Fetzer (less) | $41 amazon.com |
