 | Fresh on the heels of the October, 1972 release of their third album, Gypsy Cowboy, the New Riders of the Purple Sage embarked on an East Coast tour that would quickly solidify their reputation as America’s premier psychedelic-country-rock outfit. Pulling into the historic confines of Tremont Street’s Boston Music Hall on a Tuesday night in December, the New Riders had their engines primed and delivered a powerful set of originals that included "Sutter’s Mill," "Groupie" and "Whiskey" from Gypsy Cowboy, and fan favorites "Truck Drivin’ Man," "Hello Mary Lou" and the stompin’ show closer "Willie And The Hand Jive." With Buddy Cage now firmly entrenched behind the pedal steel guitar and taking the band to a new sonic plane, you can feel the energy and excitement of the night come solidly through on NRPS staples "Whatcha Gonna Do," "Portland Woman," "Last Lonely Eagle," " Louisiana Lady," "Glendale Train" and "I Don’t Know You." | | Kentucky was once blessed with an astonishing spectrum of regional fiddle styles, ranging from back country tunes carried in with the first wave of Scots-Irish immigrants, through bluesier pieces played by the black settlers of its farmlands, and reaching even to the quadrilles and cotillions once heard at the fancy dress balls of Lexington. This two volume set of field recordings, made between 1972 and 1995, samples the way the fiddle used to sing out at the dances of northeastern Kentucky. The present volume is devoted to the music of the little communities that dot the Kentucky River as it winds its way down from the ragged canyons of Wolfe County to the gently rolling hills of the inner Bluegrass state. | | Larry Nelson was born in Broken Bow, Nebraska in 1944. Since 1971 he has served on the faculty of the School of Music at West Chester University, where he teaches theory and composition. He is also co-director of the Evenings of New Music Series that has served since 1972 to bring new music to the college campus. He has established close ties with musical audiences throughout the country but with a particular focus around Philadelphia and throughout Pennsylvania. He has composed works for solo instruments, chamber ensembles, orchestra and the electronic medium. In describing his music Nelson says, “I utilize mathematical strategies or formal systems and I use computer technology in the creation of my music while, at the same time, my music is very much grounded in traditional concepts of lyricism and harmonic motion.” A reviewer described Nelson's music as “having an open and easy approach to tonality- neither insisting on it nor rejecting it. Musical intuition is supplemented... (less)Artist: | $10 - $18 5 Merchants |
| | 2008 archive release from one the forgotten greats of late '60s British Rock. The band was formed in London in 1969 by ex-Country Joe & the Fish bassist Bruce Barthol and two old friends from the Berkeley California Folk music scene, Gary Petersen and Phil Greenberg. Fat Harry was soon signed up by the original Pink Floyd management company. A quartet of 'musician's musicians', admired by everyone from Ralph McTell to Edgar Broughton and Michael Chapman, the group made only one LP for Harvest Records before disbanding in 1972. Now, this previously unreleased collection of studio demos and live recordings (taken from the band's own archive) finally sets the record straight, delivering a heady mix of Country, Folk, Blues and Psychedelia, as well as including, for the first time ever, a version of their much-loved live favorite, 'Mariachi Riff'. | | Ever wondered what would have happened if Hillbillies and Hayseeds put down their fiddles and banjos and got their hands on some Space-Age technology? Wonder no more. In 1971 academic and experimental music composer Gil Trythall was commissioned by Athena Records and Studio boss Rick Powell to record a Switched On Bach for "country folk". Trythall dutifully ran country and bluegrass standards, and the hits of the day, through the valves and circuits of a battery of Moog synthesizers and related hardware. The resulting 1972 album, Country Moog (Switched On Nashville) is certainly unlike anything ever heard before (or since, for that matter). Equal parts virtuosic musicianship, bizarre musiqueconcrete effects and just plain enter taining, the original album was popular enough to spawn a sequel, 1973's Nashville Gold (Switched On Moog). Cited by Bob Moog as one of his favourite "Moog" recordings, both albums are included here for their first appearance on CD with a number of rare o... (less)Omni | $19 amazon.com |
